Scottie Scheffler storms to Masters win after four-way fight becomes procession

Scottie Scheffler

The Masters tournament was planned to start on the back nine on Sunday, but Scottie Scheffler didn't wait that long to show his skills. He's become so good at golf that it's fair to compare him to the great Tiger Woods during his prime.

There was growing optimism that Ludvig Åberg could make history as the first Masters first-timer since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 to receive the coveted Green Jacket. This would have been an even more remarkable feat for Åberg, given that he had never even competed in a major golf championship prior to his appearance at Augusta National last Thursday.

At the 9th hole, Åberg amazed everyone when he made a spectacular 36ft putt to score a birdie. The ball swerved downhill as it found the bottom of the cup, causing the crowd to cheer and shout in excitement. Shortly after, Åberg and his caddie were seen laughing together next to the green, showing how carefree and youthful he is. He didn't seem to feel any pressure despite being tied for the lead after 63 holes in the Masters tournament. It's hard to believe that just a year ago he was still studying in a college in Texas.

At this moment, Åberg was concerned about who the man was in the group behind him. It's hard to believe that Scheffler didn't score on the 9th hole. The ball only missed going in by a few millimeters. However, Scheffler managed to get a birdie and take the lead. He never lost that lead and it was clear he wouldn't. In the future, cheeseburgers and milkshakes will be served at the champion's dinner in 2025.

Before the fourth round, Scheffler was expected to win. It seems that nothing could distract the 27-year-old golfer, who has now won the Masters twice in the last three attempts. He is also the first player to successfully defend the Players Championship. Since February 2022, Scheffler has won nine trophies, including three in his last four tournaments. He has consistently placed in the top five, showcasing an unparalleled level of skill and accuracy. As many golfers have struggled to keep up with the current state of the game, Scheffler has remained confident and dominant on the course, earning an impressive amount of prize money in the process. He won an additional $3.6 million from Augusta National. The last player to be favored to win the tournament and actually win was Woods in 2005.

Scheffler won first place in the Masters edition with a score of 68, beating the runner-up by four shots. Despite challenging weather conditions, Scheffler managed to reach 11 under par and the worst score he had was 72. Åberg came in second place with a score of 69.

The infamous Amen Corner showed its fierce side once again. The part of the golf course that is known for its picturesque view still proves to be quite daunting. Collin Morikawa was making good progress but then recorded a double bogey on the 11th hole. Max Homa hit his tee shot on the 12th hole and it landed in a bush. He was penalized two strokes for that mistake. Similarly, Åberg also stumbled on a hole before Morikawa did. During his turn, the Swede's second shot landed in the water. It's worth noting that even though Scheffler had a bogey on the 11th hole, he still maintained his lead by three strokes because of the struggles of the other players involved.

Åberg responded strongly to his opponent's challenge and landed a shot at the 13th hole to bring him closer to the world No. 1. However, Scheffler quickly regained his lead with a four on the same hole. Despite this setback, Åberg managed to score a birdie on the tricky 14th hole to keep the competition alive. Scheffler was undeterred by his rival's efforts and swiftly responded with an impressive iron shot that put him three shots ahead of Åberg with only four holes remaining. Unfortunately, Åberg's drive at the 15th hole was not up to par and he missed the opportunity to score. Scheffler further secured his lead with a birdie at the short 16th hole, leaving Åberg four shots behind and seemingly out of the game. Goodnight, Vienna.

Tommy Fleetwood performed exceptionally well and achieved a tied position for third place with an impressive score of four under without any bogeys. Although he could have been in an even greater position, his shot for a birdie at the 16th hole hit the flagstick, but didn't go in. Surprisingly, it remained above ground. In any case, Fleetwood's performance at the Masters tournament is his best yet. Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith completed their round at minus two.

Rory McIlroy faced a situation that he did not want to encounter, as he evaluated the abilities of other players during the final stages of this major event. He placed 22nd with a score of 73, and he acknowledged that his chances were being hindered by technical issues. McIlroy is still hoping to achieve a career grand slam, but he is aware that it is taking a while to happen. When asked about Scheffler and his excellent performance, McIlroy simply replied with a smile, saying that Scheffler doesn't worry about much and that the game feels effortless when everything is going right.

When you're not at your peak, it can be difficult to get back into the groove. Your mind becomes consumed with finding the right approach, making it even harder. Yet, when you're in top form, everything comes naturally, without overthinking or second-guessing. Although McIlroy may have some struggles, there's no doubt he'll recover soon. However, it's impossible to ignore the talent and excellence of Scottie Scheffler, a rising star in the golf world that even Woods himself would admire.
