Masters 2024: Scottie Scheffler earns second Green Jacket at Augusta National

Scottie Scheffler

The occasion of Scottie Scheffler winning the Masters title at Augusta National in the year 2024 was unforgettable.

The final standings for the Masters 2024 competition.

The top three players on the leaderboard at the golf tournament are Scheffler from the United States with a score of 11, followed by Aberg from Sweden with a score of 7. In third place, there is a tie between Morikawa and Homa from the United States and Fleetwood from England, each with a score of 4. In fourth place, both DeChambeau and Smith have a score of 2, with DeChambeau representing the United States and Smith from Australia.

Other notable scores from the event include: Level par from Hatton of England, a score of +4 by McIlroy from Northern Ireland, and Fitzpatrick from England also at Level par. Meanwhile, some competitors didn't fare as well, with Rahm from Spain and Willet from England scoring at +9 and the US's Woods at +16.

Scottie Scheffler, who was the top-ranked golfer in the world, secured his second Masters victory with an impressive performance at Augusta National. This only proves why he was viewed as the favorite before the tournament started.

Scheffler was ahead by a single shot in the preceding day, but in the final round on Sunday, he managed to hit a score of four-under 68, which secured him the win by a margin of four, with a final total of 11 under.

Ludvig Aberg from Sweden completed his first major tournament by shooting a 69 and taking second place.

Tommy Fleetwood from England obtained the third position along with Collin Morikawa and Max Homa from the United States with scores of 69, 74, and 73, respectively.

Fleetwood managed to bring about a remarkable round, which enabled him to make a late surge up the leaderboard and secure his highest ranking at the Masters.

However, it was impossible to catch Scheffler. As he claimed his second Masters victory in three years, the 27-year-old American expressed his emotions on the 18th green as the Augusta patrons gave him a well-deserved applause.

It was possible that the winner of the 2022 championship might not finish the last round.

Scheffler, who hails from Texas, announced on Saturday that his wife Meredith is about to have their first baby. He also stated that he is willing to quit playing in the middle of the Augusta tournament if his wife goes into labor on Sunday.

During the ceremony where he received his Green Jacket, Scheffler spoke to his wife and declared: "I have an affectionate feeling towards you and I'll return to our dwelling place without delay. I'll make efforts to reach home as soon as possible."

He stated, "It's indescribable how it feels to win once more at this location, and the joy that will come when I become a parent for the first time cannot be expressed through words."

Scheffler Proves Himself As Rivals Fail

No one has been considered a top contender for the Masters at Augusta since Tiger Woods' dominance in the 2000s, but Scheffler has emerged as a formidable opponent.

He entered the initial significant tournament of the year having won two of his last three tournaments - the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship - as well as coming in second place at the Houston Open.

The authoritative figure, along with his impressive record as a previous winner of the Masters tournament, resulted in his chances of winning being as low as 4-1 at the beginning of the event.

Even though he didn't perform as well as expected in the first three days, Sunday's final round saw him only one shot ahead, especially after an exciting round on Saturday where he bounced back from a number of errors.

Nonetheless, he struggled to control the distance of his iron shots during the early stages of the game and a mistake on the seventh caused him to fall back to the same level as Morikawa and Aberg. Following his successful birdie on the eighth, Homa became a part of a group of four players with the same score, sharing the top spot on the leaderboard.

Scheffler, who was in the group behind Aberg and Homa and was playing alongside Morikawa, scored a birdie on the same hole and once again took the lead with a score of seven under.

Suddenly, there was a magical moment that seemed to hold the promise of changing everything - and it turned out to do just that.

Scheffler showed exceptional ability on the ninth hole by hitting an 89-yard approach shot with great precision. He skillfully spun the ball and took advantage of the terrain at Augusta to direct it towards the pin. This resulted in back-to-back birdies, with Scheffler only needing to perform a simple tap-in shot.

In the Masters Tournament of 2024, Scottie Scheffler made a remarkable shot on hole number nine that stood out as the highlight of the event. It was an impressive display of skill and precision that left a lasting impression on the spectators. Scheffler's shot was undoubtedly the talk of the tournament and will go down in history as one of the most memorable moments of the competition. Overall, Scheffler's performance was exceptional, and his shot on the ninth hole only added to his impressive display on the course.

Scheffler scored three birdies in a row on the 10th hole. However, when the leaders came near the famous Amen Corner - consisting of the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes - it was still hard to predict who would win.

Nevertheless, when he began his game at the brief 12th hole, the victory was practically certain for him, unless he made any major mistakes.

In just 15 minutes, Scheffler's competitors, Aberg, Morikawa, and Homa, all made the expensive mistake of double bogeys, giving Scheffler a comfortable three-shot lead, despite Scheffler himself making a bogey on the 11th hole.

Aberg and Morikawa made mistakes on the 11th hole and hit their shots into the water. Homa was unlucky on the famous 12th hole and had a bad bounce that resulted in him hitting into the bushes and receiving a one-point penalty.

After reaching that moment, Scheffler could loosen up and getting birdies on holes 13, 14 and 16 inferred that winning was almost certain.

Aberg's dream of being the third male to win during his inaugural appearance in a major competition were shattered. However, he managed to secure second place by making birdies on the 13th and 14th holes after a setback.

The calm and collected 24-year-old turned pro only 10 months ago. European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald hailed them as a "rare talent." They then went on to assist Europe in defeating the US in Rome last September.

People respect him for his precise hits and his excellent display over the weekend indicates that he will be a constant contender to win major championships.

McIlroy Misses Opportunity As Fleetwood Shines

The British and Northern Irish players have not shown much improvement, but Fleetwood has exhibited a lot of patience and has received a great achievement by finishing in the top 10.

Actually, Fleetwood required a superior performance to position himself as a top contender, however he played steady enough to boost his confidence for the upcoming US PGA Championship at Valhalla next month.

"I think I needed some extra excitement. However, the golf course didn't offer many opportunities," stated Fleetwood, who participated in the Masters for the eighth time.

It's uncertain whether my chance will arise, however, my only option is to continually work towards getting there and delivering showings as impressive as this.

Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland didn't have an impressive finish, and unfortunately, he still hasn't won the elusive major title even after 10 years.

At the age of 34, this individual emerged victorious in four major competitions spanning from 2011 until 2014. This included two victories at the PGA Championship, alongside triumphs at both the Open Championship and the US Open. Despite this impressive record, he was ultimately unsuccessful in his quest to join the exclusive group of just five others to have achieved a career grand slam.

In the challenging weather conditions, McIlroy had difficulty and didn't perform well in his initial rounds, scoring 71, 77, and 71 respectively. He concluded with a 73 score and ended up behind by four over.

"I haven't had much luck this year but I'll persist and continue trying until I achieve success," he declared.

Tyrrell Hatton from England finished with a score of level par after completing the final day with a 69. On the other hand, Matt Fitzpatrick completed the tournament with a score of four over and Danny Willett, who won the championship in 2016, played his first game since undergoing shoulder surgery in September. Although he began the game well, he ended up with a score of nine over.

Struggle Continues For Woods And Rahm

Tiger Woods, who has won the Masters five times, came in last place among the 60 players who qualified to play in all four rounds. He scored a five-over 77 in his final round, which resulted in a total score of 16 over.

It was quite an accomplishment for the 15-time champion just to make it to the weekend. He had hardly played in the previous year due to injuries caused by a car accident in February 2021.

Despite the crowds, Woods had supporters trailing him at the sites of his most significant victories. These fans cheered him on as he made his way to the last green, hoping to catch a glimpse of the 48-year-old golfer at Augusta again in the future.

Jon Rahm, who was previously the champion, had no chance of winning this time around. His performance during the Masters was the worst he's shown in his eight appearances at the event.

Last year's champion, a Spanish golfer aged 29, surprised everyone by joining the new LIV Golf competition. However, he only managed to score 76 this time and ended up with a nine over par score.
