Ford’s Nugget Camper Van Is Cool, But We Need An Electric Version In The US

Ford Motor Company

Ford has just made an exciting announcement about the newest edition of its "Nugget" campervan. This time, the vehicle has been developed in partnership with Westfalia and comes with an electric power option. So, let's delve into the features of this van and later explore some potential improvements that could cater specifically to the North American market.

Introducing The New Nugget

Let's begin by watching a brief video demonstrating this (additional details and a lengthier, more comprehensive video can be found below).

The latest Nugget camper, developed in partnership with the well-known camper remodeler Westfalia, presents a unique and diverse interior layout that separates itself from other competitors. Thanks to Ford's brand new vehicle platform, which will be released this year for their top-selling Transit and Tourneo Custom models, the next-generation Nugget becomes a reality. This cutting-edge platform brings forth innovative design elements, connectivity options, and advanced driving technologies. Inside the living area, customers will be able to indulge in high-quality materials, improved functionality, and the choice of a convenient solar roof for a seamless and pleasurable escape experience.

"Nugget aims to assist owners in exploring fresh destinations—with the added convenience, connectivity, and PHEV capability of the latest model, they can now venture farther than ever before. Our customers have shared how they use their Nuggets as family vehicles, for transporting friends and bicycles to the next trail, or even as a thrilling form of retirement escape. Therefore, we have carefully crafted our newest Nugget to cater to all these diverse needs," stated Hans Schep, the European general manager of Ford Pro.

The forthcoming Transit Custom Nugget of the new era will be unveiled gradually. The first batch to hit the market will be the esteemed Nugget Titanium range, showcasing a sleek roof that can be adjusted and a formidable 170 PS EcoBlue motor, coupled with an advanced eight-speed automatic gearbox. Potential buyers will have the opportunity to make their purchases at Ford dealerships starting in August 2023, with anticipated delivery taking place in the spring of 2024. Further variations, such as the plug-in hybrid option, will be launched within the following year.

Ford introduced a fresh cabin layout for the new Tourneo Custom, enriching the comfort of passengers through exceptional artistry and premium components.

One of the main reasons why a lot of Nugget customers prefer it is because it allows for convenient movement inside the cabin. Thanks to its updated dashboard design and level floor, entering the living area from the front seats is extremely easy. The layout of the dashboard is designed to make the most of the space, while still ensuring safety with the passenger airbag mounted on the roof. Additionally, accessing and leaving the cabin is made even simpler with a lower floor, integrated side step, and the sliding side door and rear tailgate, which are the best in its class.

Ford is bringing something new to the table with the Nugget by introducing a PHEV powertrain for the first time. They're taking advantage of the technology used in the Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid, which has been the top-selling PHEV in Europe in both 2021 and 2022. The Nugget is equipped with a 2.5-liter petrol engine using the Atkinson cycle, an 11.8 kWh battery (which provides actual usable charge), and an electric motor. When these components work together, the Nugget has a total power output of 232 PS and the ability to run solely on electric power.

The latest framework boasts a separate rear suspension, which improves both the smoothness of the ride and the control of the vehicle. Furthermore, individuals who engage in outdoor sports or desire increased assurance when maneuvering through festival parking lots can opt for the all-wheel drive alternatives.

The focus on safety was extremely important. The latest Nugget puts safety and convenience first, even for people who are used to driving smaller cars. It provides a comfortable driving position that is similar to a regular car, the choice to have an automatic transmission with eight gears, and advanced assistance systems for the driver. These systems include Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centring, which helps to prevent exhaustion during long trips on the highway or in heavy traffic. Furthermore, Reverse Brake Assist and a 360-degree camera system help drivers maneuver through narrow areas.

Ford and Westfalia have made significant enhancements to the new version, enhancing its overall quality and ergonomic aspects. They have completely overhauled the layout of the living area, establishing distinct sections dedicated to cooking, relaxation, and rest. Such an innovative interior design enables campers to freely navigate within the cabin, cook meals, and enter or exit the vehicle without causing any disruption to one another, even when two double beds are assembled.

The seating space in the Transit Custom Nugget offers a safe and comfortable journey. It conveniently changes into a place to eat and sleep when the vehicle is parked. Along with improved storage and high-quality materials, Ford has also incorporated a range of features including:

A well-designed kitchen with an L-shaped configuration improves the overall cooking experience. The addition of a functional new refrigerator drawer makes it easier to reach and store items, including tall bottles. The built-in stove and sink now come with a convenient hot water feature, and the streamlined countertop design provides an extra 20% of dedicated workspace. Ensuring the safety of children, the drawers have soft-close latches and the handles reduce noise when opening and closing.

The updated version of Nugget boasts enhanced design features compared to its predecessor. A notable improvement is the inclusion of a mattress section that can be flipped up, allowing for increased headroom in the kitchen area while keeping the upper bed intact. The rear bench now comes with track mounts and convenient new controls that enable easy adjustment with just one hand. In addition, a hot/cold shower outlet is now a standard feature at the rear end, with the option to add on a tailgate privacy tent. These new additions elevate the camping experience, offering an array of exciting features.

The inside of the car is equipped with an assortment of technological elements, which consist of touch-sensitive control panels, ambient lighting, and the ability to connect with smartphones.

US Needs E-Transit Leader

Although I have a strong desire for a product similar to the Nugget, it is essential for the US market to have something more substantial, like a "Chicken Breast". Due to larger family sizes, longer journeys, and our preference for bigger things, Ford should consider developing a model based on the larger Transit platforms available in this region.

Additionally, as CleanTechnica, we generally prioritize battery electric vehicles (BEVs) over hybrids. Therefore, it is logical to develop a model specifically designed for the US market, utilizing the largest E-Transit with the most spacious battery. This approach aligns with our mission and has greater environmental benefits. Moreover, the ability to enjoy a luxurious camping experience while relying solely on electric power would be both extravagant and devoid of any fossil fuel consumption.

If you're a representative from Ford and happened to stumble upon this blog, let's have a conversation. We're genuinely interested in embarking on a nationwide journey with a vehicle of this nature.

I have a dislike for paywalls. You also dislike paywalls. It's safe to say that nobody actually likes paywalls. At CleanTechnica, we briefly implemented a limited paywall, but it never felt right to us and it was difficult to determine what content should be restricted. In theory, the most exclusive and highest quality content should be behind a paywall. However, this means fewer people get to read it! We simply have a strong aversion to paywalls, which is why we have made the decision to get rid of ours. Unfortunately, the media industry remains a challenging and fiercely competitive field with minimal profit margins. It is an ongoing struggle to keep afloat and potentially even grow. So...
