The New Anantara Brings Maldives-Style Over-Water Villas To UAE

In the Style

The United Arab Emirates has many fancy hotels that are very luxurious and offer top-level hospitality. But if you're like me and want something different, you should visit Ras Al Khaimah Emirati, which is an hour away from Dubai. Here, there are big mountains called the Hajar Mountains (yes, the UAE has mountains!), and the coastline is full of nice mangroves. The new Anantara Mina Al Arab is special because it has over-water rooms like the resorts in the Maldives. It's the first one like this in the Middle East! The hotel is on a private peninsula that looks out over protected mangroves and the open Arabian ocean.

I experienced the UAE's warm hospitality in January at a resort that had only opened a few weeks prior. The place is still relatively unknown to typical tourists visiting Dubai.

Anantara Mina Al Arab has a total of 174 rooms, including suites and villas that have been built around nature. The luxurious pool villas and overwater villas have taken inspiration from the world-famous Maldives, with their roofs shaped like dhoni (fishing boats), high ceilings, and a private pool on the overwater deck that offers magnificent views of the mangroves. The spacious rooms have a touch of classic luxury that Anantara is renowned for, combined with authentic local elements that give the place an authentic feel. The bathrooms are designed in the typical Maldivian style, where the indoor space flows seamlessly into the outdoor space, with a freestanding tub, dual rain showers, and stunning views of the ocean. A highlight of my stay was enjoying my coffee in the morning and sipping cocktails in the evening on my private deck, watching the tide ebb and flow in the mangroves outside my villa.

During my stay at this hotel, I had access to six different dining options ranging from restaurants and bars to private dining experiences in my room. One of my favourite spots was Sea Breeze; this place had an up-to-date decor and a beautiful terrace with a fantastic view of mangroves. I loved having my breakfast and all-day meals here because it had abundant variety. I had a wide selection of continental and Asian buffet-style dishes to choose from, and I could also order a custom-made meal to my liking. For lunch and dinner, Sea Breeze offered a range of delicious meals cooked using a mixture of methods, including a wok, wood-fired grill, and tandoor oven.

Mekong is a restaurant that is well-known for its fusion of various culinary styles, and it is one of the most prominent features of the Anantara Mina Al Arab establishment.

The Beach House restaurant has a chill and fashionable ambiance and offers freshly made Mediterranean dishes. Their dinner service is particularly fantastic, with custom cocktails, cool music, and shisha for after-dinner relaxation. That said, my preferred restaurant was Mekong, which celebrates Anantara's Thai and South Asian heritage. Chef Prabhash Prabhakaran, who I first met at Anantara Kihavah a while back, has created a stunning fusion of dishes that take the dining experience up a notch. You'll find traditional Thai welcome signs down a long hallway that leads to open tables and secluded dining pods. If you're after something quick, Waves Café is a must-visit. They serve an incredible array of smoothies, cold-brew coffees, sandwiches, and healthy bowls, as well as irresistible pastries and gelato, all day long.

Waves Cafe at Anantara Mina Al Arab serves a wide variety of salads and healthy bowls that are full of vibrant colors and delicious flavors. These dishes are packed with fresh ingredients and wholesome goodness, making them the perfect choice for health-conscious diners. Whether you're looking for a light lunch or a satisfying dinner, Waves Cafe has something for everyone. So why not stop by and try one of their tasty and nutritious salads or bowls today? You won't be disappointed!

There are various alternatives when it comes to dining at Anantara. You can visit Jalabar, which is a buzzing bar located by the pool where you can indulge in some familiar foods, snacks, and drinks that will reinvigorate you. The Lobby Lounge & Bar is also an excellent option if you're looking for top-notch coffee, pastry, or some light bites in the evening. Furthermore, if you would like to have your very own private dining experience, Anantara's Dining by Design is worth considering. In fact, I personally decided to try this option right after a tedious 15-hour flight on my first day there.

Just like other Anantara properties around the world, the Anantara Mina Al Arab Spa offers a blend of ancient healing methods and relaxation techniques to promote wellness. The spa has seven treatment rooms and two couple suites, and their menu offers a wide range of treatments, including the signature four-hand massage, chakra balancing ritual, and Tibetan singing bowl healing. During my visit, I tried the Thai healing treatment which focuses on balancing the body's 'sen' or meridian lines to achieve physical and mental harmony. After that, I indulged in the Ras Al Khaimah Ritual which included a body scrub made of dates, salt, and honey sourced from the resort's own beehives, providing a uniquely local experience.

Ras Al Khaimah is known for being the ultimate location for excitement in the UAE. It offers loads of thrilling activities like hiking trails, the Jais Sledder toboggan ride, and the Jais Flight zipline, which happens to be the longest zipline globally. Only a quick drive away from the resort, these activities are a must-try. In case you prefer to stay on-site, the resort has numerous activities to offer, including a sanctuary for bird enthusiasts. The property is an ideal spot for watching numerous shore birds like herons, flamingos, and ibis that migrate during low tide. You can view these birds all day long, but the prime time to go for bird-watching adventures is at daybreak moments before the tide comes in. The resort also has a water sports center within the premises that provides paddle boards, kayaks, and jet skis for lease.

Observing various bird species is a common activity enjoyed by many visitors to Anantara Mina Al Arab.

The land is encompassed by thick mangroves that have an important function in safeguarding the nearby ecosystem. These mangroves diminish the wearing away of the coastline, soak up the carbon dioxide in the air, serve as a reproduction location for oceanic creatures, and therefore, offer a means of living for fishing villages.

The mangroves embrace the shores near the lodging area.

The Anantara Mina Al Arab resort will open a new discovery center in May 2024. The aim of the center is to inspire visitors to appreciate and care for nature by providing interactive activities such as planting mangroves and kayaking. Additionally, educational programs will help to foster a shared sense of responsibility for protecting the environment.
