The West End production of Opening Night, featuring Sheridan Smith, will end its run sooner than expected. The producers cited difficult financial circumstances as the reason for the early closure.

Smith portrays a prominent character suffering from mental health issues and loses control during a live performance.

The director Ivo Van Hove expressed that it is always disheartening when a performance is terminated too soon.

The show received different opinions from critics. The New York Times described it as a terrible performance, while The Express admired the actor, but commented that the musical was an utter failure.

Smith was labeled as "superb" by Time Out, while the Guardian praised the show as "glittering and exceptionally unique".

In her recent role, Sheridan Smith shared that she utilized her own personal experiences with mental health to deliver an authentic performance. By tapping into her own struggles, she was able to bring depth and genuineness to her portrayal. This is a prime example of how art can be a powerful tool in bringing awareness to mental health and reducing stigma. It takes courage to open up and share personal struggles, and Sheridan's willingness to do so is admirable. Her performance not only entertained but also educated audiences on the realities of mental health.

Van Hove declared the end of the show and praised Smith's extraordinary performance. He acknowledged her courage to act in a challenging role in London's theatrical district.

He stated that the first night will always be remembered by those who witnessed it and were part of it.

Nevertheless, it has been acknowledged that a few spectators exited the theater before the conclusion of the performance.

The creators of Wessex Grove announced that despite the difficult financial situation, they were willing to take a chance on Opening Night. Although the outcome wasn't received as well as they had anticipated, they still feel an immense sense of achievement and pride for their daring choice and the incredible production they put together.

The music and words for the show were created by Rufus Wainwright, a singer-songwriter. It was originally going to end on 27 July, but now it will finish on 18 May.

Some of the show occurred outdoors, away from the inside of the theater.

When she was interviewed by the BBC before its opening last month, Smith said that her upcoming role could be her toughest yet.

During the show, some scenes happen in the open air outside the Gielgud Theatre. In this part, Myrtle - the character played by Smith - falls down in an inebriated condition right outside the stage entrance. Meanwhile, the images of this scene are displayed on screens within the theatre hall.

The storyline is derived from a movie made by John Cassavetes in 1977, and it charts the journey of a theatre troupe as they gear up to perform a production on the biggest stage in America.
