Premier League record falls as 2023-24 becomes most goal-laden 20-team season

Premier League games

This season's Premier League has had the highest number of goals in any campaign featuring 20 teams, and Harry Maguire was the unexpected player to secure a spot in the history books of the 2023-24 season.

Maguire was the first Manchester United player to score an equalizing goal twice as they took on Sheffield United on Wednesday. They managed to secure a 4-2 victory, with Bruno Fernandes scoring two goals in the latter half of the game.

The goal made by the centre-back at the 42nd-minute mark was a crucial moment, marking the 1,085th goal that has been scored in this season's Premier League.

This is the highest score ever recorded in a season with 20 teams since 1995-96.

During the 2022-2023 season, a total of 1,084 goals were scored, which was achieved on the last day of the season. This amount has exceeded the previous record of 1,072 goals scored during the 2018-2019 season when there were 20 teams.

The goal that broke the record was appropriate to be scored against Sheffield United since they have contributed to making the current season (2023-24) with the most goals so far.

The Blades have allowed a whopping total of 92 goals this season, surpassing the previous record for most goals conceded in a 38-game Premier League season.

Chris Wilder's team has four games left to play, one of which is against Newcastle United, who had a convincing win over them earlier in the season with a score of 8-0. It is highly plausible that Wilder's team could reach 100 points with these remaining matches.
