‘I really enjoyed it’: Amy Winehouse biopic applauded by fans despite harsh reviews

Amy Winehouse

Following the dispute and numerous unfavorable evaluations before the debut of the movie Back to Black, based on the life of Amy Winehouse, Grace and her mother Jetta had reservations about watching the film.

Jetta shared that her daughter expressed some negative feedback about a certain thing, and she wasn't quite certain what to expect. However, when she experienced it for herself, she observed that the character resembled her daughter in terms of speech and overall appearance. Although it wasn't flawless, Jetta acknowledges that no one can perfectly emulate Amy.

The duo, who identified themselves as originating from Camden, expressed their positive reaction to the film. However, they believed that certain negative aspects of Winehouse's existence, mainly involving her former spouse Blake Fielder-Civil and father, Mitch Winehouse, were downplayed in the film.

"Jetta stated that her former husband had it easy," she remarked.

Grace agrees with what was said before and continues by expressing her thoughts on other things she has seen about Amy. She mentions how these things have portrayed Mitch in a negative way. Grace believes that they should have shown how he played a part in helping Amy become famous. Despite this, she understands that it's hard to represent every perspective accurately.

She suggests that to have a thorough understanding of her entire story, those individuals must have been involved in it and the composition of the screenplay. She believes that it is necessary to approach it with skepticism.

The movie tells the story of Winehouse's life, starting from when she was a young adult until she passed away due to alcohol poisoning in 2011. Most parts of the movie take place in Camden, which was her home during her twenties.

Gopi and Raakhee visited Camden to pay their respects to Amy by watching the movie on its debut day.

Raakhee expressed that they received negative feedback about the movie before watching it, which caused concern that they may have to leave halfway through. However, upon viewing it, they found that it portrayed the character accurately and thought it was a well-done film.

According to Gopi, Marisa Abela's portrayal of Amy in the movie was remarkably accurate. Gopi even claimed that when she looked at a poster for the film, she had to do a double take because Marisa appeared as if she was really Amy.

It's impossible for her to resemble Amy precisely since she possesses her distinctiveness, lacking Amy's boldness. However, she does an excellent job of depicting Amy's quirks, intonation, and communication techniques; her speech is reminiscent of Amy's.

Vala Magnadóttir, a Camden resident for two decades, shares that the film faithfully depicted the borough during that period. She expresses her pleasure in watching it and how her familiarity with the music scene at the time allowed her to relate to some of the events. However, seeing a group of male journalists depicted in the movie came as a bit of a shock for her.

I reside in close proximity and noticed the notable features, but the realization that all of that was transpiring so nearby without my knowledge came as a surprise. It was truly jolting.

According to Magnadóttir, Abela's portrayal of Winehouse was impressive and she was particularly struck by how accurately she mimicked the singer's voice. Magnadóttir described the singing as exquisite and lovely.

"I was aware that there was some disagreement, but I didn't pay much attention to it... I mean, it's clear that she's a performer rather than Amy. Let's be lenient with people," she expresses.

In my opinion, the movie was very charming and visually appealing.
