Willie Limond: Former British boxing champion dies at age of 45

The offspring of Willie Limond has declared on social media that the previous holder of the British and Commonwealth championship title, Willie Limond, has passed away at 45 years old.

Limond was a professional boxer from 1999 to 2023 and was victorious in 42 out of his 48 fights. Unfortunately, he became unwell last week while driving due to what is believed to be a seizure.

Jake expressed on Instagram that he doesn't think it's necessary to write a post like this, but due to the abundance of false information being shared by journalists and through fake news, he feels compelled to do so.

My father passed away during the wee hours of the morning at approximately 3am. He bravely held on for almost 10 days.

"Brave fighter. I love you, brother."

Limond, a former footballer for Albion Rovers, had competed in five league matches before claiming the prestigious British super lightweight championship title in 2014. He achieved this after a successful victory over Curtis Woodhouse by majority decision.

Back in 2007, he made quite an impact when he knocked down the then-up-and-coming boxer Amir Khan during a fight to protect his Commonwealth title. After a while, he ended up retiring in the eighth round against the talented future world champion.

He had previously won the European championship in 2004 after winning unanimously against Youssouf Djibaba, and subsequently fought against Anthony Crolla in a bout for the British championship in 2011.

Limond's last fight was in September 2023, where he lost via a stoppage in the eighth round against Ricky Burns in Glasgow.

The St Andrew's Sporting Club, a boxing club in Scotland, released a message expressing their shock and sorrow regarding the passing of their colleague, Willie Limond.

Willie was more than just a famous athlete - he had a personality that was contagious and we will all feel his absence deeply.

Our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathies are with Jake, Drew, Macy, and the entire Limond family during this difficult moment.
