Official: Cleverley Confirmed As Permanent Head Coach

Tom Cleverley

Watford FC is thrilled to announce that Tom Cleverley has been appointed as the permanent Head Coach for the Hornets.

Ever since assuming the position on a temporary basis in the prior month, the 34-year-old has overseen the squad over a series of seven games in the Sky Bet Championship. Of those seven games, five were played against teams who ranked in the league's top seven.

The Hornets only suffered a single defeat during that timeframe, managing to keep their opponents from scoring in four matches while also achieving five ties and one victory.

Cleverley decided to retire from playing due to an injury last summer. He then started his coaching career by joining the Watford FC Academy in July. Cleverley led the Under-18 team to a successful season, securing second place in the Professional Development League table and reaching two cup semi-finals. Later on, in March, he became the Interim Head Coach for the first team.

When he was just a player of twenty years old, Cleverley achieved great success during his time on loan from Manchester United to the Watford team in 2009/10. He stood out as an outstanding player and even won the Player of the Season trophy. Later on, he then went on to win the Premier League with Manchester United three years after.

After coming back to Vicarage Road in 2017, the former England player played an important role in the team for more than four seasons in the Premier League. He also helped the team advance to the final of the 2019 FA Cup and gain promotion from the Championship in the 2020/21 season.

As he approached the end of his time as a player, Cleverley served as Club Captain. He retired from playing after having played in 182 matches for Watford and scoring 19 goals, leaving behind a notable record.

Soon, the complete structure of the first-team staff for the 2024/25 football season will be announced.
