Floella Benjamin to receive BAFTA Fellowship at BAFTA TV Awards 2024

The BAFTA Fellowship is being awarded to Baroness Floella Benjamin during the upcoming BAFTA Television Awards in association with P&O Cruises.

Baroness Benjamin is widely recognized for her numerous children's programmes such as Play School, Play Away, and Jamboree, making her a familiar name in many households.

Throughout her professional journey, Benjamin has graced the stage in various musical productions including Jesus Christ Superstar and Black Mikado. Later on, she transitioned to television where she shone in notable shows like the Sarah Jane Adventures, CBeebies Bedtime Stories, and Within These Walls.

Benjamin expressed how incredibly happy and overjoyed he is by the award he received. He compared his current state to standing at the peak of a mountain, glancing down at all the amazing opportunities and successes he has encountered in his extensive 50+ year career in the television industry.

My journey so far has been full of excitement and difficulties along the way, but today I stand here with the highest recognition that BAFTA can award.

I am very happy that my work, mostly dedicated to kids, is receiving recognition and being celebrated in such a manner.

Back in 2010, Benjamin achieved a notable milestone by being the very first lady from Trinidad to be conferred with the title of baroness in the House of Lords. Her revolutionary efforts have brought her great recognition and accolades, like an OBE for making significant contributions to children's broadcasting. She has also earned herself a Lifetime Women in Film and Television Award. Furthermore, the late Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon Benjamin the Order of Merit.

Benjamin will receive the Fellowship honor at the P&O Cruises BAFTA Television Awards event on May 12th, taking place at the Royal Festival Hall.

Sara Putt, the head of BAFTA, expressed her admiration for Baroness Benjamin as she announced the decision to award her the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship. This recognition was earned due to the Baroness's relentless efforts in advocating for children and youth, significant contributions to TV broadcasting, and consistent backing of diversity.

The upcoming BAFTA TV Awards will be broadcasted on BBC One and iPlayer on May 12th, 2024.
