Nel Hydrogen ASA has received a funding of $5.6m to expedite the progress of innovative PEM electrolyser stacks.

The funding for the Nel ASA subsidiary was provided by the US Department of Defence (DoD). Additional funds will be utilized to enhance the development of advanced materials and processes.

Nel has joined hands with the Engineer Research and Development Centre - Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (ERDC-CERL) to expedite the progress of PEM electrolyser stack advancements. This collaboration will pave the way for affordable hydrogen storage and the development of robust applications.

According to Kathy Ayers, who holds the position of Vice President of Research and Development at Nel, there is a sense of enthusiasm regarding the expansion of their current project alongside ERDC-CERL. Their aim is to make progress in the field of PEM electrolyser technology.

In January of 2023, Nel made an announcement stating that it will provide HH2E, a company based in Germany, with up to 120MW of electrolyser capacity. Both companies have agreed to conduct a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study, as well as sign a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish two electrolyser plants in Germany, each with a capacity of 60MW.

Following the successful negotiation of a definite agreement for the provision of alkaline electrolyser equipment, the company was subsequently granted a substantial order worth €34m (£30m) from HH2E.

HH2E will utilize Nel's electrolyzers in its hydrogen projects planned for Germany, specifically at its Lubmin site in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The production of hydrogen will commence in 2025 and gradually increase by 2030.
