Meeting Chris Lowe: The Story

In 1981, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe bumped into each other at the Chelsea Record Centre, a store that sold high-quality sound equipment. This shop was situated at 203 King's Road in the Chelsea area of London.

Tennant and Lowe became friends after Tennant bought a Korg MS-10 synthesizer. They both love disco and electronic music and bonded during a conversation about their common interests.

Taking inspiration from synth-pop albums such as 'Souvenir' by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) and 'Bedsitter' by Soft Cell, the duo's artistic exploration mirrored their lifestyles during that period. They completely immersed themselves in the music of electronic pioneers like OMD, Soft Cell, Kraftwerk, the Human League, and Depeche Mode.

They first teamed up in Tennant's flat in Chelsea and later moved to a tiny studio in Camden Town in 1982. While their early demo tapes were labeled West End, they ultimately decided on the famous name Pet Shop Boys.
