Do motorbikes have to pay the ULEZ charge or are they exempt?

Sadiq Khan

From August 29 onwards, the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is set to widen its reach and cover the entirety of Greater London.

Introduced by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Transport for London (TfL), the augmentation will precipitate a scenario where any automobiles failing to comply with emission regulations will be subjected to a monetary penalty on a daily basis.

Ever since the expansion plans were unveiled in late 2022, the ULEZ £12.50 fee has sparked intense debate, with a significant number of individuals still expressing objections.

The ULEZ is not the initial motoring fee implemented in London, as both the congestion charge and LEZ have been enforced previously.

Nevertheless, the ULEZ marks a significant milestone by encompassing almost all vehicles that fail to meet the required criteria, leaving numerous individuals dissatisfied, including those who ride motorcycles.

Are Motorbikes Subject To ULEZ Charge?

Similar to other modes of transportation, motorcycles are only exempted if they fulfill the necessary criteria, as mentioned by TfL.

Motorbikes are required to adhere to the established emission criteria while riding within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) or else they have to make a payment of £12.50.

This encompasses bikes, scooters, three-wheeled motor vehicles, and four-wheeled motor vehicles (belonging to the l-category).

Which Motorbikes Avoid ULEZ?

In order to qualify for exemption from ULEZ charges, your vehicle must conform to the Euro 3 standards for NOx emissions.

You have the opportunity to verify whether your bicycle is eligible for exemption by visiting the TfL website.

Motorbike riders can also provide proof from emissions tests conducted at testing centers authorized by TfL.

If the examination is a success, the establishment will forward the outcomes to TfL and they won't levy any fees for the ULEZ.

Riverbank Motorcycles Ltd can be found in Unit 12 of Riverbank Business Park, located on Dye House Lane in Bow, London with the postcode E3 2TB.

Testing UK Ltd is located at 5 Bowman's Trading Estate on Bessemer Drive in Stevenage with the postal code SG1 2DL.

If you fail to meet the criteria, you will incur a daily fee of £12.50 for traveling within the ULEZ.
