Rachel Riley says 'wasn't my intention' after Channel 4 fans demand 'sacking'

Rachel Riley

Rachel Riley from Countdown made a long apology after getting into a disagreement on Twitter. Some people are demanding that Channel 4 fire her because of her comments. Rachel apologized for a tweet she posted about the stabbings at a mall in Sydney, which some people accused of promoting prejudice against Islam. The tweet has since been removed.

Rachel, who previously appeared on the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing, explained that her tweet was not meant to suggest that the recent attack was the result of any particular belief system or related to Islamic terrorism. She made it clear that, at the time of the tweet, the attacker's identity was still unknown and she therefore did not make any assumptions or connections.

I wanted to bring attention to the regular calls for 'intifada' that are happening in London and other places in the world. These calls for violence are becoming more and more common on our streets. To keep my family safe, I have avoided using the subway and staying away from protest marches that happen every Saturday. It's concerning that these extremist chants are allowed to happen without much public concern.

It is unfortunate that the violent incident that occurred in Sydney resembles the kind of attacks witnessed during the previous intifada. I sincerely hope we can prevent such occurrences in the future. However, disregarding the problem will not solve it. Lately, some people have labeled anti-Semitic acts as a form of “resistance.” It is essential that we speak out against all violent acts, no matter who is responsible or who is affected. I apologize if my message was unclear.

She continued speaking: "I've been thinking about this all day long and I deleted the first tweet. However, I have one more thing to say about the issue. I want to apologize to those I hurt by my words. My post was not clear and even though it had good intentions to oppose violence, it wasn't appropriate to share at that moment, which made it easier for people to misunderstand. I am sorry."

I understand that subtlety isn't well-liked on the internet. I am certain that many of the individuals who are pointing this out are the same individuals who have attempted to silence or terminate my job for the past six years. They are likely eager to participate in calling for aggression against their opponents. However, I am convinced that there are people who are not in that group, and it is to them that I am writing this.

In the past few months, I have also experienced an attack and it was a couple of the Muslim faith who came to check on my well-being afterwards. I appreciate their kind actions and aim to rectify any harm that may have been done to their community.
