The Masters 2024: Bryson DeChambeau admits to 'mistakes' over past 'par-67' comments about Augusta National

The Masters 2024

Bryson DeChambeau confessed that he has committed some "errors" in the past with his statements concerning Augusta National. He uttered this while establishing the clubhouse aim at The Masters.

The ex-champion of the US Open had an impressive scoring streak on the last nine holes of the golf course last Thursday. He managed to score five birdies in just six holes from the 12th, which contributed to his overall score of seven strokes under par, resulting in a total of 65 strokes.

DeChambeau did exceptionally well in his first round at The Masters, which happens to be his personal best. This is significant as he received backlash previously for his comments regarding Augusta National last year. He had stated that he planned to view the esteemed venue as a par-67 owing to his capability of reaching all the par-fives with just two shots.

DeChambeau stated that his comment was misinterpreted and that he acknowledges and values people's opinions. He also mentioned that he now has a deeper appreciation for this golf course compared to a few years ago.

Today was definitely a challenging assessment of my golf skills, but I succeeded in overcoming the obstacles of a particularly tough golf course.

Concerning the 67 remark, you see, you made an error. I am not flawless. Everyone makes mistakes. You gain knowledge from your error, and that was surely one.

I plan to go out and give my best effort to achieve the highest score possible. You could view it as a mathematical equation if you choose to. However, when I followed this mentality before, it led to negative consequences and set me back considerably. It caused a lot of problems and setbacks.

"Listen, I want to emphasize that I did really well today. I played an exceptional round of golf and scored 65. However, I am aware that there are still three more days left in the tournament and I am keeping that in mind. I need to maintain focus and perform to the best of my abilities."

DeChambeau is currently leading the competition by one point. The reigning world champion, Scottie Scheffler, managed to play a flawless round, and is only one point behind DeChambeau. Meanwhile, Danny Willett made an impressive debut after being absent from the competition for 207 days, ending his day with a score of four-under 68.

Willett Shocked By Surprising Start

Willett did not take part in any competition after having surgery on his shoulder following the BMW PGA Championship in September. The surgery was supposed to keep him out of action for a year, but he surprised everyone by declaring himself ready to participate in the first major tournament of the year just days before it kicked off.

After a gap of 207 days, the British golfer played his first competitive round by combining seven birdies and three bogeys, resulting in a splendid score of 68, which kept him just three strokes behind DeChambeau.

"Isn't it surprising?!" Willett said to journalists after he finished his round. "My preparation has been great. The question was never about if my shoulder had enough strength, but if I could hit the shots I intended to."

On the ninth and tenth holes, there was a couple who didn't perform well on specific shots due to challenging winds. However, they were able to keep the ball under control and placed it in areas where we can gain points.

I didn't know what to anticipate, so it's definitely pleasant to enter with a good score and gain some self-assurance for the upcoming days. It was a surprise for me.

"We had to work harder due to the challenging nature of the game. The last four holes were particularly enjoyable, and we managed to end on a positive note. Rather than achieving an average level score, which would have been great for me, shooting a 68 left me extremely satisfied and pleased."
