Report: Stags 1-1 Colcheste

Mansfield Town

In a challenging match this afternoon, Mansfield Town, currently at the top of the league, managed to snag a point at their home stadium thanks to Lewis Brunt's equalising goal in the 64th minute against Colchester United.

With ease, the defender placed the ball into the net after a corner kick to equalize the score and nullify Harry Anderson's early goal in the 12th minute.

The Stags are still the leaders of the league, and are ahead of Stockport by five points. This is before the Hatters go up against MK Dons today, starting at 5.15pm.

Nigel Clough decided to stick with the same squad that triumphed over Bradford with a 5-1 win in the previous game. Elliott Hewitt, who was the Player of the Season in the last season, made a comeback to the Mansfield team after regaining fitness following an ACL injury that he had sustained in April of the previous year.

After a fair and balanced start to the game, Stags had the chance to score first just three minutes in. Lewis Brunt made an excellent play by stealing the ball from Colchester's Jayden Fevrier and starting a counter-attack. Lucas Akins then set up Hiram Boateng on the edge of the box, but unfortunately Boateng missed by just a little with his side foot.

After facing a lot of pressure from the Stags, Colchester managed to score first at the 12-minute mark. Fevrier passed the ball precisely to the box from the left side, and Tom Hopper managed to redirect it towards Harry Anderson's way. Using quick and strategic footwork, Anderson then shot a powerful strike that found the bottom left corner of the goal.

After Anderson's first goal, Mansfield took control of the game and almost got a few opportunities to score.

At the 28-minute mark, a skillfully launched Stephen Quinn pass found Davis Keillor-Dunn in the penalty area, however, the striker missed his attempt to guide the ball into the goal by a small margin from a distance of 10 yards.

Just before the halftime whistle, Mansfield got a shot on goal thanks to Will Swan taking advantage of a mistake by a Colchester player. Swan ran towards the penalty area but moved the ball towards the left side and aimed for the net. However, Owen Goodman made a great save to prevent a goal.

After the break, the opposing team remained dangerous on the counter-attack. One of their players, Alistair Smith, who was previously part of the Mansfield Academy, was able to find an opening and nearly scored at the 53-minute mark with a quick attack from their right side.

Throughout the game, the home team persisted in causing trouble for their opponents when entering the final third of the pitch. On the 56th minute, Keillor-Dunn nearly scored an equalising goal for his team. He cleverly worked with Bowery on the left side of the field to get close to the opposing team's goal box. Keillor-Dunn took a shot, but unfortunately, Jay Mingi made a last-second block to prevent the goal.

After six minutes, Stags attempted to score again, but Goodman prevented them by tipping the header from Baily Cargill around the post. The header was made possible by a superb Quinn cross.

After the ball was kicked into the Colchester box on the next play, there was a commotion in front of the goal as players tried to get control of the ball. Brunt managed to push the ball into the net, marking a goal for Mansfield and bringing the score to a tie.

At the 70th minute mark, the hosts had to make a substitution due to Cargill suffering an injury. McLaughlin then took his place at left back.

In just two minutes, the guests received two warnings during the 74th and 75th minute of the game. Firstly, Samson Tovide collided with Louis Reed, and then Hopper came in too late and hit McLaughlin.

Mansfield was dominating the Colchester's side of the field, and almost scored a goal on the 83rd minute with a fast counterattack. They sent a long ball forward to Tovide, who collected the ball and took a shot from outside the box. However, Pym made an important save by diving and tipping the ball onto the post.

After three minutes, Arthur Read kicked the ball towards the corner and Ellis Iandolo, who was a substitute player, was able to receive it inside the penalty area. Iandolo then made a high header aiming for the top left area of the goal, but unfortunately, Pym made a great save to prevent a goal.

Just a couple of minutes after, Ollie Clarke made a great move that opened up an opportunity for the Stags. He sent a swift pass from the right to the Colchester box. It looked like Swan was about to take a shot, but he was knocked down, and surprisingly, no penalty was given.

Ultimately, Mansfield had to be content with securing a draw at One Call Stadium, however they still maintain their position at the top of Sky Bet League Two.

The players for STAGS were Pym, Bowery, Flint, Brunt, Cargill (subbed with McLaughlin at 71 minutes), Reed, Boateng (subbed with Clarke at 71 minutes), Quinn, Keillor-Dunn, Akins, Swan (subbed with Nichols at 90+1 minutes).
