The stats behind Leverkusen's unbeaten title run

Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen has been declared the winner of Bundesliga, becoming the 13th club to achieve this title. It's been a long time since a new champion has emerged, and the last time it happened was in the 2008-09 season when Wolfsburg earned the honor.

Bayer Leverkusen has won the German championship for the first time ever after 120 years of existence.

Xabi Alonso's team secured the championship with five games left to play after a convincing 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen amidst their ecstatic fans.

Ecstatic supporters rushed onto the field to revel in the moment as Leverkusen advanced to a total of 79 points, which is 16 points ahead of their closest opponents Bayern Munich, with a mere 15 points remaining to be played for.

Alonso, a former midfielder for Liverpool and Real Madrid, deserves praise for his impressive accomplishment. He took over as coach in October 2022 when the team was near the bottom of the league standings.

The victory of Leverkusen put an end to Bayern's dominance in the league, which had lasted for 11 consecutive championship wins.

Incredible success of BBC Sport has been analyzed with focus on various noteworthy numbers.

Bayern Munich has been in complete control of German football over the years. It's been a long time since any team other than Bayern has been able to win the Bundesliga, with Borussia Dortmund being the last one to achieve this feat way back in 2012.

Things have completely transformed as Leverkusen has obtained the championship title after managing to not lose any matches during the entire season, even with the added challenges of participating in both Europa League and German Cup competitions.

Alonso's team has only lost 8 points throughout 29 matches, securing 25 wins while settling for a draw on four occasions.

Moreover, they are set to accomplish a remarkable feat by potentially winning three major trophies. They have already taken a step towards this by winning the first-leg of the quarter-finals against West Ham in the Europa League with a score of 2-0. As well as this, they have the opportunity to claim victory once again in the German Cup final on the 25th of May against Kaiserslautern, a second-tier team.

The number of times they have lost a game remains zero up until now, comprising 43 matches in every type of competition, and if they continue it for the whole season, they will surpass the milestone created by Benfica during the 1960s.

Leverkusen has been victorious in 38 out of 43 games this season, with five matches ending in a tie. Their impressive performance has led to a total of 123 goals scored and only 31 goals conceded.

They haven't lost a game since May 27th, 2023.

Leverkusen achieved a new milestone in the Bundesliga by claiming victory against Werder Bremen on Sunday, resulting in an unbeaten start to the season.

Before this current record, the longest undefeated streak was held by Bayern during Pep Guardiola's first season in charge in 2013-14, which lasted for 28 games.

According to David Keppel, a fan of Leverkusen and a broadcaster, it's absolutely incredible to remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga and put an end to Bayern Munich's longstanding dominance.

The supporters are feeling very joyful.

'Bayer Leverkusen No Longer The Neverkusen'

During the 2001-02 season, Bayer Leverkusen were competing for a trio of trophies which included the Bundesliga, the German Cup, and the Champions League.

The campaign resulted in the creation of the infamous nickname 'Neverkusen', a label which the team has been unable to escape.

Keppel expressed, "The ache from 2002 is still entrenched within me. We were on the brink of winning three major titles, but instead, we had to endure the anguish of not emerging victorious in any competition."

Leverkusen has been the second-best team in the Bundesliga five times, however, they have successfully dismissed the negative nickname 'Neverkusen' after they won the Bundesliga championship.

Their victory on Sunday marked their first championship win since they were victorious in the German Cup competition back in 1993, where they prevailed against Hertha Berlin by a score of 1-0.

Leverkusen's second goal against Werder Bremen was scored by Granit Xhaka.

Despite signing for £21.4m from Arsenal last summer, the Swiss midfielder had only scored his second Bundesliga goal. However, his experience has been crucial in their pursuit of winning titles.

On Sunday, Victor Boniface, a Nigerian forward, scored his 11th goal of the season in the league. Florian Wirtz, a forward from Germany, wasn't in the starting lineup, but he came in as a substitute and went on to score three goals in the second half, achieving a hat-trick.

Wirtz has become the initial athlete to achieve a hat-trick in the Bundesliga match after being substituted in, following in the footsteps of Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland in 2020.

Alex Grimaldo (9) and Jeremie Frimpong (8) have contributed significantly with their goals, and Alonso's coaching techniques have also received commendation.

The three-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern Munich and a Champions League winner at Real Madrid as a player, who happens to be a Spaniard at a 42-year-old age, has been connected to previous teams Liverpool and Bayern as they both search for new managers in summer.

Alonso decided to remain at Leverkusen despite other opportunities. He is highly appreciated by the fans at the club.

A few minutes following the announcement of his team becoming champions, the tune 'Eviva Espana' was played via the speakers at BayArena as a tribute to him.

According to Keppel, Leverkusen has consistently struggled with disappearing during matches and underperforming when it counts. However, with the acquisition of some veteran players, the team has gained a slight advantage.
