Bayer Leverkusen clinch historic Bundesliga title with rout of Werder Bremen

Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen has won the prestigious Bundesliga championship by winning a phenomenal match against Werder Bremen, scoring 5-0, and continuing their unbelievably long unbeaten streak to 43 games, which included a record of 29 undefeated matches in the league.

Leverkusen has won the game and is now 16 points ahead of all other teams in the league table. This means that Bayern Munich's attempt to win their 12th consecutive title has come to an end.

Even though Bayern won against Köln on Saturday, it only prolonged the competition for one more day. However, Xabi Alonso's team won the title with five games left by defeating Werder at the BayArena. The victory was achieved through a Victor Boniface penalty, Granit Xhaka's impressive second-half goal, and a hat-trick from Florian Wirtz.

Alonso joined Leverkusen in October 2022 when they were struggling to survive a potential relegation. However, he quickly managed to improve the team's performance and led them to win their first Bundesliga title. Before this, Leverkusen had been the runner-up five times. The team has also secured a place in the German Cup final. Additionally, they have a promising advantage of 2-0 from the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against West Ham. With these accomplishments, there is a high chance that the team could win a potential treble.

Leverkusen showed their determination by winning against Leipzig in the season's first match. Afterwards, they went on two impressive runs, winning eight and ten games consecutively. In the second run, they made a statement by defeating Bayern 3-0 in February, which helped them distance themselves from other teams at the top of the standings.

The coach from Spain has made it clear that he will not be leaving his current team anytime soon. His contract isn't up until 2026, and he's already put an end to rumors suggesting that he might rejoin one of his past clubs, like Bayern Munich or Liverpool. Despite receiving interest from other teams, such as Real Madrid and Chelsea, the 42-year-old coach is choosing to stick with his current team. He's looking forward to taking on the challenge of coaching in the Champions League for the first time when the next season rolls around.

Leverkusen's season has made an impression through the excellent performances of players who were previously thought of as unimpressive. The team has been thriving with Boniface as the forward, Wirtz and Xhaka managing the midfield. Grimaldo, the Spanish defender who joined for free from Benfica last summer, has taken command on the left side and Frimpong, the ex-Celtic defender, has contributed to the team's goal-scoring from the other side.

In Alonso's team, there are players who were not appreciated before, either in Leverkusen or in other places, but now they have become unlikely champions in the Bundesliga. Although some more famous clubs might be interested in Wirtz, Boniface, and Jonathan Tah this summer, the fact that Alonso will remain at BayArena for another season and the success they have achieved under him means that there is no need to disperse the squad. It may be difficult to repeat this successful season, but with what Alonso has accomplished so far, it is not impossible.

Stay tuned for Jonathan Liew's coverage of the Leverkusen scene.
