Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta Ghosted for Grease 2 Cameo

In 1978, Grease became a cinematic phenomenon, grossing an astounding $366 million at the box office and turning its cast members, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, into superstars. Naturally, both stars were approached to make a cameo appearance in the sequel, Grease 2.

Ghosted by Grease 2

Initial talks went well, but for reasons unknown, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta were not part of the cast as filming began for Grease 2 in 1982. Newton-John was reportedly unhappy about this and in 2016, when asked about her thoughts regarding the sequel, replied, “Not a lot,” during an interview with a fan.

The Casting Troubles of Grease 2

Another challenge that the production faced before filming began for Grease 2 was casting. Tom Cruise was initially considered for the role of Michael Carrington, but producers changed their minds despite liking him because they wanted someone taller. Cher was also lined up to play Paulette Rebchuck, but left due to a dispute over her salary, leaving the production searching for another star.

The Praise for Grease Live!

Newton-John was more generous in her praise for the TV movie adaptation of Grease when Grease Live! premiered in 2016. Julianne Hough played Sandy and Aaron Tveit was Danny Zuko in the production. Newton-John told Billboard that she had encouraged Hough to bring her own distinctive style to the role.

According to Page Six, Newton-John enjoyed watching Grease Live! and was quoted as describing it as “fun.”
