I flew business class for the first time and was surprised that my casual go-to outfit made me so uncomfortable

Business class

I had my debut in business class this year and committed a single blunder: opting for a too relaxed attire. Although JetBlue doesn't enforce any specific dress code, I couldn't help but notice that I was the sole passenger sporting comfy garments. In my next voyage, I'll opt for a more sophisticated ensemble and ensure to carry cozy clothes to switch into during the flight.

As I neared the entrance to JetBlue's very first flight to Paris last month, I could sense a heaviness in my heart intensifying.

I had eagerly anticipated the flight for several weeks, so it wasn't jitters about the journey or uneasiness about the reporting assignment I was about to embark on. Rather, in just a few moments, I became aware that I was the odd one out.

I glanced at my worn-out New Balance sneakers, loose-fitting Old Navy exercise leggings, and sleeveless top. Then, I shifted my gaze towards the group of individuals assembling to embark. Among the throng of people eager to experience JetBlue's latest Mint business class route, I stood out as the sole individual who had not bothered to dress formally. The men sported dress pants and collared shirts, while the women opted for either trousers coupled with a stylish blouse, a skirt, or a fashionable dress.

I had been extremely occupied organizing my post-flight attire that I didn't even contemplate dressing up for the journey. Suddenly, I regretted not opting for a more formal and professional look instead of my usual comfortable airplane ensemble.

I Stood Out In My Casual, Cozy Attire

I have to admit, my Old Navy trousers are somewhat acceptable as pants if you don't inspect them too carefully. Moreover, JetBlue doesn't have any specific requirements regarding attire for travelers in their Mint business class, and surprisingly, no one criticized my attire or asked me to modify it. Therefore, it appears that I didn't break any clear-cut regulations.

I was quite uneasy, mainly because it felt as though I was the only individual attending a themed celebration without wearing a costume. It was as if I had made a major blunder in my travels, violating an unspoken rule that everyone else seemed to be aware of.

As I settled at the waiting area, I quickly covered my halter top with a sweater and hastily took a self-portrait to ask my colleagues for confidence. They provided reassurance that I didn't appear extremely unkempt, and I decided to let go of the concern, at least for now.

Nevertheless, I can't seem to get my fashion faux pas out of my mind.

Choosing A Comfy Business-casual Attire

During a conversation with Who What Wear, the airline staff shared the types of attire that can lead to passengers being upgraded to first class. The employees mentioned that individuals should steer clear of wearing "denim pants, athletic trousers, and unkempt sneakers" — a confession that resonates with me.

According to one team member interviewed by the publication, when it comes to upgrading, the key is to have an appearance that matches the desired level. It's important to be sophisticated yet not flashy. Your clothing should reflect experience with travel, but avoid being excessively adorned in high-end designer brands.

Keeping that in consideration, suppose I have the opportunity to travel in business class once more, I intend to opt for a more formal yet relaxed attire: a well-fitted pair of pants complemented by a stylish sweater or button-down shirt, or even an elegant yet comfortable dress. Additionally, I would swap my tennis shoes for a pair of classy loafers or flats.

I would definitely opt for a more fashionable blouse to complement my faux pants - and remember to pack some stylish PJs for an overnight excursion, as well.
