Southampton win at West Brom to go second

West Brom

Ryan Fraser scored his eighth goal of the season with a calmly taken shot, opening up the scoreboard.

Southampton made a great recovery after losing a long unbeaten streak during the midweek by winning against West Bromwich Albion. They won the game easily and moved back up to second place in the Championship.

Only three evenings after experiencing a 3-1 loss against Bristol City, which marked the Saints' initial loss in 25 games, Russell Martin's team displayed significant strength and effectiveness by defeating Albion, who occupied the fifth position, with two elegantly executed goals from Ryan Fraser and David Brooks, one in each half.

It must be acknowledged that Albion was quite unhappy when their head coach Carlos Corberan was unexpectedly shown a red card due to a human mistake. He innocently attempted to retrieve the ball from his technical area before it had gone out of play.

However, during the evening when Corberan's squad was observed by potential new proprietor from America, Shilen Patel, the team didn't do much to prevent their fourth loss in a league game at home from occurring. It was only the fourth time they had lost a game at home in 31 matches, which spans back 16 months since the Spaniard assumed control.

Albion were definitely thrown off balance by the unusual occurrence that resulted in Corberan being forced to sit in the stands due to 'misconduct'. This was the second time that he had received a red card this season. The reason for his ejection was when he stepped out of his designated area to retrieve the ball, only to realize that it hadn't crossed the line.

Southampton's Adam Armstrong attempted to score from the edge of the box, but was stopped by goalkeeper Alex Palmer before Ryan Fraser's 14th-minute right-footed shot gave the Saints the lead.

Stuart Armstrong kicked a curved ball over to the opposite side of the goal, and the free and clear ex-Bournemouth and Newcastle player had enough room and opportunity to guide a clean shot into the net with his right foot, which got past Palmer's desperate attempt to save and went in the bottom right corner.

During a period where the Baggies were performing well, John Swift nearly scored with a strong right-footed shot that missed the target. Later on, there was a heated moment when Darnell Furlong's shot hit Jack Stephens, and some players thought it was a penalty because Stephens had his arm in a defensive position.

Shortly after the beginning of the second half, Stephens made a crucial clearance from a flicked header by Yokuslu, and Swift narrowly missed the goal with a shot.

However, Albion was unable to discover any further opportunities before the opposing team sealed their victory by scoring a goal 17 minutes before the end of the game, resulting in them winning against the Baggies twice in one season.

Joe Aribo replaced Stuart Armstrong on the pitch, passing the ball on the left to Sam Edozie. Then, Edozie made an assist to Brooks, who had come in as a substitute player. Brooks skillfully shot the ball with his left foot, and it went past Palmer. Brooks is currently on loan at Bournemouth.

The goalkeeper for the Saints, Gavin Bazunu, was required to make a single save towards the end of the game. This occurred when he deflected Yokuslu's header that came from a free-kick. However, it was already clear that the Baggies had been defeated long before this incident took place.
