INTERVIEW: Mark Robins looks back at defeat against West Brom

West Brom

Mark Robins thinks that his team's failure to take an active approach during the first half of their game at The Hawthorns resulted in their defeat.

Coventry City lost the match against West Brom, with the opposing team scoring two goals in the first half.

During halftime, Robins decided to bring in Haji Wright, who managed to score a goal for the Sky Blues in the latter half of the game.

After the match ended, Robins looked back on how his team did.

Reflecting on the match...

In the initial half, we lacked an active approach as we failed to make any substantial attempts to obtain possession of the ball. Unfortunately, this disadvantageous tactic proved detrimental to our team in the end.

During the first half, we had three great opportunities to score. Ben managed to aim for the goal twice, and both times he succeeded in putting the ball into the net. I can't recall anything else significant happening during that period.

On that specific night, if we had shown more confidence and determination in particular aspects and displayed the same level of intensity that we showed in the second half, we could have either achieved a positive outcome from the match or even emerged as the victorious team.

Entering the second half of the game, the team is developing and improving their skills and strategy. They are progressing and becoming stronger as they continue to play.

In the latter part of the game, some adjustments were implemented and their substitute players displayed exceptional performance, which greatly impacted the match outcome.

However, when they introduced new players into the game, the outcome was not as encouraging as anticipated. Nonetheless, we persisted in our offensive tactics, determined to score a goal and regain momentum.

Kasey was taken down resulting in a penalty which Haji executed skillfully. Despite having Ellis and Torp in promising positions to score, we didn't test the goalkeeper or hit the target frequently enough.

During the second period and the first half, our major problem was the missed opportunities. Even though we had good chances, we failed to execute them properly.

The objectives that were allowed to be scored...

The two objectives that we surrendered were not good.

Johnston managed to pass the ball between Milan's legs and then he passed it back to Josh Eccles. He made an excellent shot and managed to score by aiming for the corner. However, we didn't have a good view of the situation and we thought it was not as impressive as it actually was.

The second goal wasn't really significant. The match was slowly approaching half-time and suddenly Diangana made a move that we failed to stop. We weren't assertive enough and didn't put much effort in reaching them.

The beginning of the match and the alteration during the middle period...

I didn't organize the team properly from the start, so we were unable to take control of the game and unable to advance until we made adjustments in the latter half.

Haji replaced Callum, but it wasn't fair to Callum as he didn't make any mistakes. We just had difficulties getting involved in the game.

Before the game, I knew we needed technically skilled and dependable football players, and luckily, we had just that. They were impressively secure on the field.

We needed to improve our ball handling skills and retain possession, but our efforts were unsuccessful due to our inability to maintain possession on a consistent basis.

The alterations were made due to the harms that we have sustained.
