Managerless Stoke hold on for point at West Brom

West Brom

Brandon Thomas-Asante from West Bromwich managed to level the score after Stoke’s Lynden Gooch got lucky with his first goal.

Stoke City, who currently do not have a manager, managed to secure a well-deserved point against West Brom. However, the team's inability to win continues, as they have not won in their last eight Championship matches.

In the 12th minute, Lynden Gooch managed to score a goal for the Potters in a fortunate way. He crossed the ball into the goal from a distance, and it sailed over the Baggies goalkeeper, Alex Palmer, landing in the far corner of the net.

Halfway through the game, the home team evened the score thanks to Brandon Thomas-Asante's excellent control and execution of a shot amidst numerous players in the opponent's penalty zone. This was his sixth goal in the current league season.

The team led by Carlos Corberan tried to score a goal to win the match, but their attempt was unsuccessful as Jack Bonham made an impressive save from Thomas-Asante's shot and Kyle Bartley's header was disallowed due to the player being in an offside position.

The recent match between West Brom and Stoke City resulted in a draw, making it the first one in their last 10 league encounters.

West Bromwich Albion moved up to the fifth position in the standings, surpassing Hull City due to their better goal difference. However, they are still lagging behind Southampton by six points. Stoke City, on the other hand, continues to struggle and sits at the 19th position. But they are three points ahead of the relegation zone.

At The Hawthorns stadium, Albion's Jeremy Sarmiento attempted to score a goal by hitting the ball over the bar from a cross by Grady Diangana. However, it wasn't successful as the home team's supporters were shocked when Gooch managed to score the first goal.

The Stoke team swiftly played a free-kick from the center of the field, with Bae Jun-Ho passing to Gooch on the right. Gooch then crossed the ball, which ended up being too high for Palmer to save.

The Potters were successfully preventing the home team from scoring and then quickly moved the ball down the field, but unfortunately Ryan Mmaee's attempt was stopped by a defender.

Sarmiento, who is currently on loan from Brighton, impressed for the home team and came close to scoring at the 27th-minute mark. Unfortunately, Stoke goalkeeper Bonham made a fantastic fingertip save to block his shot that was struck with a lot of power.

Albion evened the score at the 35th minute mark thanks to an impressive effort from Darnell Furlong. Furlong managed to steal the ball away from Stoke's Michael Rose, who was attempting to guide it out of bounds.

Furlong passed the ball into the box and Okay Yokuslu tried to shoot, but his attempt was stopped. However, the ball bounced off the defender and Thomas-Asante took advantage of the opportunity to score a goal against Bonham.

In rapid succession, Stoke's defender Rose came through for his team twice when the hosts were attempting to score another goal. Firstly, he headed the ball over his own bar to prevent a dangerous curved shot from Jed Wallace on 66 minutes. Next, he executed a perfectly timed challenge as the West Bromwich Albion substitute Tom Fellows was attempting to break through for a goal.

The Potters didn't have many opportunities to score, but in the second half, Josh Laurent had the best chances. Unfortunately, one of his shots was deflected narrowly wide by Alex Mowatt and the other missed the goal completely even though he was well-placed after some great work from Ki-Jana Hoever.

In the end of the game, Albion focused heavily on attacking the Stoke goal. They had several opportunities to score and win, including when Thomas-Asante attempted a shot that was stopped by Bonham's knee, and Bartley's header was unfairly disallowed. The keeper even managed to block a powerful shot by Pipa to prevent Albion from scoring.

Paul Gallagher, the current interim manager of Stoke, has been in charge of two games so far. Both resulted in draws with a score of 1-1. Gallagher took over after the previous manager, Alex Neil, was fired. Neil was let go due to a string of losses in four consecutive matches.

The two teams will compete once again on December 23rd in the last set of Championship games prior to the holiday break.

West Brom are travelling up north to take on Middlesbrough, who are currently in 13th place under the guidance of Michael Carrick. Meanwhile, Stoke will be playing against Millwall, who are also struggling with form lately, sitting just one point below Stoke and one position lower in the table.

During an interview with BBC WM 95.6, the West Brom manager, Carlos Corberan, stated that...

Overall, I believe that West Bromwich Albion was the more deserving team to win during today's match. This is because I feel that we outperformed our opponents. However, our failure to secure a victory suggests that there were areas in which we were lacking.

It was unexpected when the opposition scored a goal because I believed they were trying to make a crossing pass, but unfortunately, the ball ended up in our net. There were times when we had to be more aggressive in our offensive plays, but we were unable to disrupt the opponent's game plan. In the latter half of the game, we increased our attempts to pressure them, but their goalkeeper proved to be a formidable challenge when we did manage to take shots.

The sole experience you may feel remorseful about following a game is sensing that you did not give your all out on the field. However, if you put forth maximum effort, you will not experience any regrets.

We must improve in certain areas and make necessary adjustments, however it is crucial to end the game with the satisfaction of knowing we gave it our all. Today we gave it our best shot but unfortunately fell short. Moving forward, we will reflect on our performance and strive to achieve victory in the future.

During an interview with BBC Radio Stoke, Paul Gallagher, the temporary manager for Stoke, made some comments.

I'm happy with how we went about the game, our diligence and determination were superb.

I believe we exhibited true excellence at moments. I instructed the players to have faith in themselves and perform with assurance. The aspect that brought me the most joy was that we resembled a united team.

It's always a tough match when we visit this place, as we have to rise to the occasion and confront the test ahead. Their coach is top-notch and they possess an exceptional level of organization.

"Bonham did an excellent job in saving some shots for our team, but overall our defense was very strong. Obtaining a draw away from home is a positive result and now we look forward to the next game."
