9 Mar 2023

The Star Wars universe has created some memorable alien creatures, and this week’s episode of The Mandalorian did not disappoint, ending with a big reveal and the series’ first glimpse of the mythosaur.

The existence of the creature was first mentioned in the first series of The Mandalorian, when Kulli tells titular character Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) his Mandalorian ancestors rode and tamed the mythosaur.

Here’s everything you need to know about the mythosaur’s appearance and significance in The Mandalorian.

What is a mythosaur?

The animal is a sacred, essential part of Mandalorian culture, and the episode marked the first live-action appearance of a living mythosaur.

The existence of the beast was mentioned when Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) read a plaque located at “the living waters” in the Mandalore mines, stating that the Mines of Mandalore were once home to the mythosaur.

According to Mandalorian folklore, Mandalore the Great tamed the mythosaur, and some Mandalorian armour is stamped with the mythosaur skull emblem.

Although mythosaurs were regarded as mythical beings, as their name implies, how much people believe in them depends on how religious they are.

This week’s episode, “The Mines of Mandalore,” sees Din Djarin, Grogu, and Bo-Katan visit the mysterious realm of Mandalore, which contains the mines and the holy Living Waters of Mandalore. After being captured by a enemy droid and saved by Bo-Katan, Din-Djarin to bathe in the Living Waters, which are sacred, so he can atone for removing his helmet in Season 2 and be redeemed.

The mythical beast is glimpsed when Bo-Katan dives into the Living Waters to save Din Djarin, who leaves his heavy armour on while wading in and falls off a steep cliff edge beneath the surface.

Bo-Katan’s helmet lamp shines on a huge, horned animal akin to a dinosaur, long believed to be extinct. The sighting confirms the living appearance of at least one living creature, although there could be more.

The Mandalorian series three is now streaming on Disney+, with new episodes released every Wednesday.
