The Spanish football league has announced that it will investigate an accusation that Jude Bellingham, a prominent player for Real Madrid, referred to Mason Greenwood, a striker for Getafe, as a "rapist" during a recent LaLiga match.

Reportedly, an event took place during Madrid's victory over Getafe on 1 February, as per Cadena SER, a Spanish radio channel that made the complaint public. The match ended in a 2-0 scoreline in favor of Madrid.

The league acknowledged the complaint to The Associated Press and expressed their intention to employ a lip-reading facility to investigate the situation and formulate a plan for further action.

Greenwood made a controversial move to Getafe on a loan agreement from Manchester United in September. This came after he left his former team due to a criminal investigation regarding a potential attempt of rape. Despite the investigation being closed by prosecutors, his departure from the club was still a significant event.

Greenwood hasn't been in the United team since January 2022 as he was suspected of engaging in controlling and coercive behavior and assaulting a woman, leading to the broadcast of images and videos on the internet. Despite all the allegations, Greenwood has consistently stated that "I didn't do what I was accused of."

In February 2023, the prosecution wrapped up the case stating that they couldn't realistically secure a conviction because they lacked key testimonies and because new evidence that emerged complicated the case.

Nevertheless, both United and the player came to the conclusion that it would be beneficial for him to search for a different team. This ultimately resulted in the debatable decision to loan him out to Getafe.

The Associated Press tried to get comments from both Real Madrid and Getafe about the allegations against Bellingham but they haven't responded yet. It's also unclear if any consequences will follow if it's proven that Bellingham did insult Greenwood, as Getafe claims.
