Renée Zellweger will once again play the character of Bridget Jones in a fourth installment of the film series, titled Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which earned an Oscar nomination.

The eagerly awaited follow-up will feature the return of Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson to the franchise. In addition, there will be appearances by fresh faces Leo Woodall (known for acting in One Day and The White Lotus) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (famous for his roles in 12 Years a Slave and Doctor Strange).

Working Title and Universal Pictures have joined forces for the production of a new movie which will be helmed by Michael Morris, known for his work on "Leslie" and "Better Call Saul".

It is still uncertain if Colin Firth will come back to play the role of Mark Darcy, Bridget's initial romantic interest.

Helen Fielding made up the character of Bridget Jones who is always single. She wrote about her in a column for The Independent.

When The Independent approached Fielding to write about single life in London using his own experience, he declined because he felt it would be too uncomfortable and vulnerable. However, a senior editor named Charlie Leadbeater proposed that Fielding create a fictitious character to write through, and Fielding jumped at the opportunity.

In 1996, Fielding made public her columns as a novel, and afterwards released a continuation called The Edge of Reason in 1999.

Bridget Jones's Diary, an adaptation of a novel, debuted in 2001 as a movie. Subsequently, two sequels, titled Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Bridget Jones's Baby, were produced in 2004 and 2016, respectively. All three films collectively amassed more than $760 million in revenue worldwide.

The upcoming installment of Bridget Jones's Diary series will be influenced by Fielding's novel published in 2013 titled Bridget Jones's Diary: Mad About the Boy. The story involves the protagonist, a 51-year-old mother of two who is unmarried and is trying to navigate her way through the complicated world of modern dating, where social media and dating apps play a significant role.

The world has transformed since her previous unsuccessful attempts to find a partner, and the updated narrative portrays the amusing protagonist as she fixates on her body weight, alcohol consumption, and calorie intake in a novel era complete with advanced technology and modern standards while she is in her 50s.

The book reveals that Darcy met an unfortunate end through an accident and this left Bridget without any companion. However, the Mail on Sunday reported that it's uncertain if the film will stay faithful to the book regarding how Darcy met his untimely fate.

The upcoming film might change its course as stated by writer Helen Fielding on the show Desert Island Discs. She expressed her surprise at the "sexism" depicted in the previous movies, further emphasizing that such material cannot be created in the present.
