Dead Boy Detectives review – this fun paranormal romp will make you feel young again

Dead Boy Detectives

The first episode of Dead Boy Detectives can be overwhelming due to all the information provided. However, after analyzing it, I have a better understanding of the storyline. Two best friends, Charles and Edwin, are the main characters. Unfortunately, both have passed away; Charles in the 1980s and Edwin during the Edwardian era in 1916. Despite this, they remain on Earth and use their time to free trapped souls who are not happy. During their adventures, they encounter Death, who they must try to avoid. They call themselves dead boy detectives and are always on the run. They possess the ability to escape and travel through mirrors. Charles also has a special backpack that can store an infinite amount of items. One important detail is that they are vulnerable to iron.

Let's get started with the main event! This show is perfect for a younger crowd and is sure to be a hit. Once it gets going, it moves quickly and finds its rhythm after a bit of a shaky start. The clairvoyant character, Crystal Palace (played by the captivating Kassius Nelson), joins the group after they help her escape from a demonic possession. Although she can’t recall anything about her past, she has a psychic vision that leads them to a missing child in danger and surrounded by dark magic and supernatural terrors.

Crystal and her partner have to travel by conventional means since she can't teleport through mirrors. They arrive in a typical small town called Tropeville and encounter a witch named Esther, who stays young by kidnapping young girls and draining their life force. Esther's character, played by Jenn Lyon, steals the show from the main characters. The detectives and their psychic partner manage to save the missing girl, but Charles briefly takes over Esther's body. This triggers the authorities in the afterlife, who begin searching for them. This event sets the stage for future episodes, with the hunt for the missing characters providing the series arc.

There are plenty of mischievous activities happening in this blog section. The Cat King, played by Lukas Gage, raises many uncomfortable questions for Edwin. Niko, Crystal's neighbour, adds a comedic element to the story and must be cured of her pastel-puking condition before she explodes. There are spells, talking animals, ghost children with attitude, lexicographical glasses, and a light steampunk meets Heath Robinson aesthetic. David, Crystal's demon, still finds them wherever they go, and a postman delivers letters begging for their help. They also encounter a magic shop full of enchanting artefacts, run by a cursed walrus. Esther and her familiar add a sense of vengeance and joy to every scene.

Dead Boy Detectives is a television series based on characters that Neil Gaiman created. Steve Yockley is the showrunner, who also produced the hit show, Supernatural, and the adrenaline-pumping thriller, The Flight Attendant. To truly enjoy the show, you must push past the initial awkwardness. You will then encounter skeletons in the woods, monsters, demons, and even dangerous dandelion sprites. Along the way, the detectives' deaths and how they became ghosts are revealed. This television series is a fun, thrilling adventure. It's not like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which gained more serious undertones over time. However, there is sometimes a hint of smugness that comes with anything related to Gaiman. Nonetheless, your personal enjoyment may vary.

This show is a great escape from reality and provides entertainment that is efficient and effective. While it may not be perfect, you still find yourself wanting more - maybe a little more character development or some clever turns of phrase. You want the show to be the best version of itself and take advantage of all the opportunities presented by its storyline. Despite this desire for improvement, the show is still enjoyable as is. You'll happily watch every episode, pretending you have all the time in the world.
