King Charles' Coronation Concert: The Plan, Who's Performing And ...

10 Feb 2023

If there’s one thing us Britons do well (other than forming an orderly queue and trying to solve every problem with a cup of tea) it’s a royal concert. Which is why we’re counting down the days until the King’s Coronation bank holiday weekend and all the royal-related festivities scheduled to take place.

Following Queen Elizabeth’s death in September 2022, it was announced that Monday May 8 would be a bank holiday, and would follow the King’s coronation on Saturday May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London and the Coronation Concert.

On Sunday May 7, a Coronation Concert is scheduled to take place at Windsor Castle which the Palace says ‘will bring global music icons and contemporary stars together in celebration of the historic occasion’.

The concert will see 'a world-class orchestra play interpretations of musical favourites fronted by some of the world’s biggest entertainers, alongside performers from the world of dance. The performances will be supported by staging and effects located on the Castle’s East Lawn and will also feature a selection of spoken word sequences delivered by stars of stage and screen'.

As for who will perform at the event, the Coronation Choir, a vocal group that will comprise of choir singers and amateur singers from all over the country, will perform and include singers from refugee choirs, NHS choirs, LGBTQ+ singing groups as well as deaf signing choirs. The choir will also perform with the Virtual Choir, which will be made up of singers from the Commonwealth.

In January 2023 it was rumoured that all five of the Spice Girls might be reunited to perform at the concert, marking the first time the girl band will have performed together since the 2012 Olympic closing ceremony. The Sun reported that the five-piece were ‘seriously pondering’ whether to perform at the ‘historical’ event.

Speaking about their sadness over not being able to perform at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last year, Mel C previously said: ‘With us girls, there is so much that we would like to do but there are four, five, people involved with families and other commitments and responsibilities. So, I think that was something that we had to miss.’

During the concert viewers will be treated to ‘Lighting up the Nation’, which will involve several locations in the UK being lit up with projections, lasers, drone displays and lights.

So, how do you get a ticket to the Coronation Concert?

There will be a national ballot for Coronation Concert tickets, which will be free and hosted by the BBC. The ballot will be open to the public and involve several thousand of tickets being given out.

Further information about the ballot and when it opens will be announced soon.

We'll continue to update this article as more information is released.
