Strikes could end as Wrexham workers receive new pay offer

Wrexham

The potential end to seven weeks of striking is looming in Wrexham as Unite reports receiving a fresh pay offer from the council.

Employees of the council in Wrexham have started to cease work since the beginning of September as a result of a continuous disagreement over their pay.

Employees are currently taking a stand for their wages by creating picket lines at Abbey Road, Ruthin Road, and Queen's Square.

The strike has had a significant impact on various operations, particularly the removal of garbage throughout the urban area.

At the beginning of this month, the Wrexham Council expressed a great amount of dissatisfaction towards Unite after their discussions came to a standstill.

In the past, members of Unite have strongly opposed the pay proposal of local authority employers which amounts to only £1,925, taking into account the inflation that workers are currently experiencing. This would mean a decrease in the real pay for these employees.

However, Unite has announced that it will proceed with a ballot of its employees in Wrexham, subsequent to a fresh proposal from the council regarding wages.

United has confirmed that they will reveal the decision on the ballot by the end of this week.

After seven weeks of a strike, Unite received a new pay offer from Wrexham Council as stated in a message.

Unite is going to ask its members who work in Wrexham Council if they are ready to agree to the proposal by voting for it.

Unite will announce the outcome of the ballot on Friday afternoon, October 27, 2023. Members will keep striking during this time. Unite will refrain from making any more statements regarding this issue until after the ballot and its outcome are made known.

The announcement from Unite has prompted an inquiry with Wrexham Council for their response.
