REPORT | Shrewsbury Town 0-1 Wrexham

Wrexham

The winning goal for Wrexham during the derby against Shrewsbury was Tom O'Connor's deflected shot. This win added to Wrexham's history in the FA Cup by defeating their opponents in an away match.

O'Connor, who managed to score against Coventry and Sheffield United in the previous season's contest as well, was able to secure the sole goal of the match during the latter half.

This indicates that Wrexham has secured their spot in the Fourth Round for the second time in a row, and the official selection will be announced on Monday evening.

Phil Parkinson kept the same Wrexham team as their victory against Barrow on New Year's Day, with Steven Fletcher, who scored a hat-trick on Monday, leading the attack once again.

As wing-back Jacob Mendy had to participate in international duties, the squad remained unchanged except for the bench. Callum McFadzean was among the players included in the squad since nine substitutes were allowed.

In the third minute of the match, Taylor Perry of the home team attempted the first shot at the goal. His attempt went straight to Arthur Okonkwo, the opponent's goalkeeper. This happened after Max Cleworth jumped to head Tunmise Sobowale's cross out of danger.

On the sixth minute of the game, Captain Chey Dunkley attempted a shot from a close distance. However, the shot was deflected and missed the goal. This happened when Wrexham was trying to pass the ball from their defensive back position.

In the eighth minute of the game, the Red Dragons had their initial opportunity to score. Fletcher passed the ball to Paul Mullin who then cut onto his right foot. However, since he was surrounded by defenders, he ended up shooting the ball from 25 yards out and missed the target.

Marko Marosi, the goalkeeper, made a half-clearance after Ben Tozer lobbed a long throw-in but unfortunately, on the tenth minute, Andy Cannon's shot was blocked by a defender.

On the 16th minute, Okonkwo needed to stay focused as Jordan Shipley sought to pass the ball towards the goal with the help of Cleworth. However, the defender was able to stop the shot from being powerful.

At the 26th minute mark, Shrewsbury had a great opportunity to score. They had a break and Malvin Benning delivered a fantastic cross from the left side. However, Sobowale wasted the chance by shooting over the goal even though it was wide open.

That was the most significant opportunity in the first half, as both teams tried to advance their positions but were unsuccessful before the break.

Just like the beginning of the game, Perry had the initial opportunity to score after halftime. However, he kicked the ball over the goal from the box's perimeter following a deflection that directed the ball towards him.

During the Wrexham game, Anthony Forde had a unique opportunity to move freely down the right side and managed to make a cross at the 54th minute. However, when Elliot Lee was under pressure, he failed to produce enough force in his header towards the goal.

On the 65th minute, Benning came close to scoring for Shrewsbury. He moved inside from the left and attempted a shot with the outside of his left foot, but unfortunately, it hit the bar.

Soon after, Wrexham was presented with a great opportunity, courtesy of McClean's low cross from the left. Lee stepped up to take the shot but his left foot missed the target completely, sending the ball soaring above the middle of the penalty area.

Both teams saw this as an opportunity to make two substitutions each. Wrexham brought on Sam Dalby and Ryan Barnett, the latter of whom was playing against his old team, instead of Forde and Fletcher. Shrewsbury also made changes, bringing on Roland Idowu and Tom Bayliss in place of Benning and Sobowale.

On the 72nd minute in the match, Wrexham took the lead with Dalby being credited for the assist. The striker received a pass from George Evans and then passed the ball to O'Connor, who took a low shot that was deflected into the goal.

Perry had a chance to tie the game for the home team during the fourth minute of added time. A long pass surprised everyone when it managed to stay inbounds right near the edge of the field. However, Perry missed the goal and shot the ball too far from the target.

One more pass was sent to Perry in an area that was not in the box a minute after, however, he once again missed hitting his shot right into the goalpost.

That was the final opportunity for Shrewsbury, as Wrexham managed to preserve their lead and secure yet another memorable triumph in the FA Cup.

The team lineup for Shrewsbury was Marosi, Bennett, Feeney (replaced by Pierre at the 90th minute), Dunkley, Anderson (substituted by Sraha at the 78th minute), Benning (subbed out for Idowu at the 68th minute), Perry, Sobowale (replaced by Bayliss at the 68th minute), Kenneh, Shipley, Bowman (taken out for Mata at the 79th minute).
