REPORT | Walsall 3-1 Wrexham

Wrexham

Wrexham's amazing 2023 season came to a regrettable end with a loss to Walsall at Poundland Bescot Stadium.

In the first half, Jack Earing scored the first goal but Paul Mullin managed to tie the game with a penalty. However, during the second half, Wrexham had a few near misses hitting the bar twice, while Isaac Hutchinson and Taylor Allen managed to score for Walsall, securing the win.

Wrexham experienced their fourth loss in the league this season, and only their fifth of the year according to Phil Parkinson's team record.

Wrexham modified their lineup for the recent match after their triumph against Swindon on Boxing Day. Coach decided to swap James Jones with first-team captain Luke Young, since Jones was unable to participate due to suspension. Additionally, Paul Mullin, who had recently recovered from an injury, filled the striker position instead of the previous player.

When Mullin recovered from his illness, Anthony Forde was replaced by him on the field and James McClean, who had scored the winning goal on Tuesday, went back to playing as a left wing-back, which is his usual position.

The Wrexham team was led by Young who attempted to score early in the game. He utilized his right foot and took a shot from outside the box after a great team effort, but unfortunately missed the goal by a narrow margin.

Walsall reacted promptly, however, and just seconds after the football passed close to the goalpost due to Elliot Lee being dispossessed, Tom Knowles switched directions and missed the target on the fifth minute.

During the beginning of the match, Mullin attempted a shot with his right foot but didn't put much power behind it and directed it straight at the goalkeeper. Just five minutes later, Hutchinson took a powerful shot with his left foot that soared high above the goalpost for Walsall.

Walsall scored their first goal 16 minutes into the game. Earing quickly took control of the ball in the penalty area and skillfully kicked it past Arthur Okonkwo on his left foot. This was the first goal Okonkwo had let in since he started playing again.

Mullin managed to score a goal in the 24th minute of the game through a penalty he earned himself. This happened when Ben Tozer made a long throw which confused the opponent team, causing Mullin to perform a spectacular move that unfortunately hit a defender's arm. This gave Mullin the opportunity to take a strong and high shot from the penalty area straight into the middle of the goal.

During the game, Mullin had a great opportunity to increase the lead score on the 30th minute. Max Cleworth redirected Young's shot towards the goal, causing Jackson Smith to fumble. However, Mullin was too hasty in taking the shot and missed the target.

In the 32nd minute, the forward made another attempt and defeated Smith on the left side from a difficult position. However, the ball frustratingly moved across the goal line without entering.

Walsall kept making opportunities for themselves. Nonetheless, Andy Cannon stepped up and made a crucial block to stop Earing's shot at 33 minutes. Tozer also had a sliding tackle to stop Donervon Daniels' attempt ten minutes after that.

At halftime, neither team was winning, but soon after the second half began, Okonkwo made a great save when Douglas James-Taylor, who came in as a substitute, headed a corner towards the goal. Okonkwo caught the ball and prevented the other team from scoring.

Tozer had a near opportunity for Wrexham. He used his head to redirect a deep free-kick from James McClean towards the goal on the 53rd minute. However, a defender managed to leap and hit the ball onto the bar just as it was about to go in.

A minute after that, McClean was asked to defend and he made a crucial block at the rear post to stop Knowles.

On the sixtieth minute, Walsall took back the advantage when Hutchinson expertly placed a free-kick over the wall and out of Okonkwo's grasp, finding the bottom corner. This was as a result of a foul committed by Andy Cannon on the edge of the box.

Wrexham had planned to replace three players with Steven Fletcher, Jordan Davies, and Forde coming in for Young, Sam Dalby, and Jacob Mendy. Unfortunately, this was thwarted because the game resumed before the substitutions could take place, which was very disappointing.

On the 69th minute, it was Forde who delivered a cross towards Mullin. The striker managed to hit the ball with his right foot but Smith saved the attempt by stretching fully.

After four minutes had passed, a ball that wasn't under control by any player came towards Elliot Lee's direction, which he managed to grab and shoot with a lot of power from the edge of the penalty box. Although, Smith was able to save the shot by grabbing it on the second attempt.

In the 77th minute, Hutchinson cleared a gap to fire a shot from beyond the zone, though unfortunately, his attempt missed the target.

Shortly after, Daniels confidently moved forward and fired a powerful shot that hit James-Taylor before being saved by Okonkwo.

Mullin almost scored a stunning goal to tie the match in the 81st minute. This happened after Lee took the ball forward and passed it to him, and Mullin then hit an intense shot that hit the bottom part of the crossbar and went out of the goal area without any danger.

Walsall increased their lead via a counter-attack within a short period of two minutes. Although Okonkwo managed to touch David Okagbue's chipped shot, Allen - who had come in as a substitute - was ready to score the rebound.

In the last moments of the game, James McClean attempted a difficult volley from a tight angle but it was deflected over. Unfortunately, this was not enough for Wrexham to make a comeback and they lost the game, thus ending their three-game winning streak.

Walsall's starting lineup for their match consisted of players such as Smith, Okagbue, Farquharson, Daniels, Knowles, Hutchinson, Comley, Earing (substituted with Allen in the 75th minute), Gordon, Draper, and Matt (substituted with James-Taylor in the 46th minute).
