Match report for Wrexham 2 Sutton United 1

Wrexham

Wrexham scored two goals, with Mullin scoring in the 14th minute and Lee scoring in the 89th minute, while Sutton United only managed to score one goal with O'Brien scoring in the 59th minute.

Although the league table indicated Sutton's position, they made sure Wrexham worked hard for their victory. Sutton put up a good fight but lost due to two exceptional goals by Paul Mullin and Elliott Lee, with the latter being scored just two minutes before the end of the game. It was a tough loss for U's as they had managed to equalize early on in the second half and defended well as Wrexham increased the pressure in the final ten minutes. Unfortunately, when a cleared corner fell to Lee, he struck a powerful volley that passed through a crowded penalty area and was unstoppable to Dean Bouzanis.

In the recent game, Sutton United made some changes in their starting line up. Ryan Jackson and Harry Beautyman were chosen instead of Josh Coley and Omari Patrick. Unfortunately, Sam Hart couldn't play as he had a broken wrist and was replaced by Rob Milsom. With Ryan Jackson in the team, the U's had the advantage of his long throw. Within only two minutes, his throw managed to cause chaos in the Wrexham six-yard box, but ultimately, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo collected the ball. Wrexham's first attack came from a James McLean corner, but Paul Mullin's header went over the bar after it rebounded off luckless Ryan Jackson. Paul Mullin is one of the best strikers in the league, and shortly after, he received a small chance just outside the penalty area, and his shot found the back of the net in the far corner, giving Wrexham the lead.

In the beginning of the match, Sutton had their first chance when Omar Sowunmi took a shot from far away which was deflected wide, resulting in a corner kick. Ben Goodliffe headed the ball just wide but the team managed to stop Wrexham's attacks in the first 30 minutes. They even had a close call for an equalizer before halftime, when Aiden O'Brien's shot from the edge of the box missed narrowly. However, there were some tense moments when Mullin ran free on the right and crossed to Ollie Palmer, whose shot went wayward. Dean Bouzanis made two impressive saves to keep the scoreline even. The end of the half turned out to be disappointing for Sutton as their free kick was easily cleared after N'Guessan delivered a low ball to the box.

In the beginning of the second half, James Jones took a shot that missed the target when Wrexham had a chance to quickly counter-attack due to Jackson and Joe Kizzi's mistake. Sowunmi also missed an opportunity to score for the opposing team when a free kick was partially cleared and the ball fell to him, but he volleyed it wide from twenty yards away. However, the U's started to pose a greater threat and just before the hour mark, they managed to score an equalizer. Craig Clay passed the ball to Smith on the right, who then delivered an excellent cross that was expertly converted into a goal with a volley by O'Brien.

After scoring a goal, Sutton enjoyed a period of dominance. They created several chances, including a missed volley by Clay after O'Brien had set it up with a cross from Jackson. However, when Mendy, a Wrexham substitute, nearly scored with a long-range shot that hit the crossbar, the game shifted in Wrexham's favour. The home team's supporters became restless and anxious, as they watched their team put pressure on Sutton's defense to score the equalizer. Despite Sutton's excellent defending with Tozer's long throw-ins and corners from McClean, they were unable to stop Lee's thunderous volley from outside the penalty box. This goal sealed the victory for Wrexham and condemned Sutton to their seventh away defeat in the league this season. However, it was also acknowledged that Sutton's defeat was one of the least deserved.
