Storm Nelson brings snow in Devon raising fears of Easter travel chaos

Storm Nelson

The occurrence of Storm Nelson has resulted in the presence of snow in certain areas of south-west England and Wales, causing concerns regarding the possibility of travel disruptions over the Easter weekend.

In North Wyke, which is located just north of Dartmoor, two inches of snow fell on the ground overnight. This happened after temperatures dropped to as low as -1.2C in Okehampton, western Devon. Meanwhile, three inches of snow were also reported in Powys, Wales on Thursday morning.

On Thursday, an intense low-pressure system, dubbed with a Spanish name, is anticipated to deliver winds blowing at a maximum speed of 70mph affecting some areas of England. This includes gusts hitting London, with a speed of up to 50mph, as reported by the Met Office.

Weather experts have predicted that a region of precipitation, including rain, sleet, and snow on hilly areas, is traveling towards the northern part of the United Kingdom at a time when people are getting ready for the Easter vacation.

According to Oli Claydon, who is a representative of the Met Office, we may see some snow on the hills in Scotland as the front of the weather system moves towards the north.

The weather situation is changing a lot and there is now an atmospheric condition with low pressure which will result in a lot of wind and rain that will be very forceful.

There is a warning for wind in the color yellow that is applicable in the southern part of Devon and other coastal areas situated in the south and southwest regions of England; this warning is effective from 7am to 6pm on Thursday.

Alerts for heavy rainfall and powerful gusts of wind in the form of yellow weather warnings were announced in several regions of Northern Ireland, while in the southern areas of England, alerts were issued for the same reasons.

The Met Office has issued a caution about the powerful winds and huge waves, as well as the chance of hail and thunder, stating that there is a low likelihood of harm or danger to life.

The upcoming Easter weekend weather is expected to be a bit unpredictable, but still relatively pleasant with plenty of sunshine and cool breezes. On Sunday, temperatures in the western region of London are forecasted to reach as high as 15 degrees Celsius while Manchester will experience a slightly lower temperature of 14 degrees Celsius – this is normal for this time of year.

According to BBC meteorologist Helen Willetts, the Spanish met service has given a name to the low pressure system responsible for the current rainfall. They've called it Storm Nelson.

"There will be gustier winds arriving later this evening and continuing tomorrow."
