Luton 1 Stoke 0 live - Alex Neil reaction, Josh Tymon injury

4 Feb 2023

Stoke City return to Championship action today after booking their place in the FA Cup last 16 and the drama of transfer deadline day.

Alex Neil is hoping to build on a couple of wins in the last two weekends, 4-0 over Reading in the league and 3-1 over Stevenage in the cup, as they head to promotion-chasing Luton Town.

Neil has some new faces with him in the travelling party, with Bersant Celina, Matija Sarkic and Ki-Jana Hoever involved in a league squad for the first time since their arrivals last week. Ben Pearson and Axel Tuanzebe, whose signings were confirmed late on Tuesday night, are carrying injuries which mean they are not available this weekend.

Stoke are 18th in a tightly-packed table going into this fixture, 12 points behind fourth-placed Luton, who are under new manager Rob Edwards.

Peter Smith

Any positives to take from today?

Neil: "I could say the same all season but I don't think there's a lot in the games. You can probably argue that for most teams you look at this season.

"But the teams at the top end of the division have a knack of taking any opportunity that presents itself.

"That happened here and let's be honest, it wasn't an easy chance. He hit it from 20, 25 yards and that's ultimately what decided the game."

Peter Smith

What did you make of Hoever coming on?

Neil: "He started really well. He ended the half well and you could see he's got good bits going forward. He's only a young lad and he's only going to get better."

Peter Smith

What did you make of Sarkic on his debut?

Neil: "He didn't really have a lot to do if I'm being honest. He caught one for about 30 yards, the goal, there were a couple he had to punch and one at the end when he might have done a bit better but he didn't really have much to do.

"We're not talking about having to make three, four, five saves, that wasn't the case.

"It was a tight, cagey game and we couldn't get the goal."

Peter Smith

How is Josh Tymon?

Neil: "He's been rushed to hospital. That tells you the severity of what we think it is. I'll find out in the next few days.

"It was a bad tackle. There was one in the first half on Josh when he tugged the lad back.

"There were some decisions that didn't go our way today. People can talk about it all they want but when the crowd is rallying and shouting for every ball in my opinion it certainly makes a difference because we didn't get our fair share.

"Their fans are vocal, they're loud. They've got an identity in terms of knowingi what they are, playing the ball forward and making the strikers do the work and feed off bits. If it's successful then why not?

"For other teams coming here, you can see why they're high in the league because they're effective at what they do.

"Our frustration is that we prepared for what was coming, we knew what was coming and there wasn't really a lot in the game. That's hard to accept."

Peter Smith

Luton had more physicality?

Neil: "They've got two centre-forwards, one 6ft 5in, one 6ft 3in and they are mobile and can get across the pitch. We knew they would hunt us and we didn't want to turn our possession of the ball against ourselves because that's what they're good at.

"But the difficulty we've got at the moment is we haven't got a clear target at the top end of the pitch so when we do turn it, it's coming straight back. Then as a midfield player it's difficult to support because the ball is coming back.

"We did it better second half, the forwards kept the ball better for that 30-minute period and we could play on the front foot and pin them in but the moments we had we didn't take advantage."

Peter Smith

Penalty claim when Jacob Brown was fouled and/or when Dujon Sterling was pulled back?

Neil: "There is the Sterling one and the one when Ben Wilmot scores and Jacob just leans into the goalkeeper. The difficulty you've got is the thresholds that some referees have got about whether it's a foul or not change. We had one in the first half when Mati thought he'd been fouled but he waved play on. Then we lean into them and it's a foul because the ball ends up in the back of the net.

"The consistency isn't there and from our perspective, in my opinion, our start to the game cost us the match."

Peter Smith

Alex Neil reaction

Neil: "I didn't think there was a lot in the game. They started brightly in the first 15 minutes, the ball going forward and their front two are a handful for most teams in the league. We spoke about making sure we match runners in the middle of the pitch and I thought for the first 30 minutes they certainly had the upper hand.

"We came into it before half-time and the game was even and I think we had 25 to 30 minutes of the second half. I thought we should have had a penalty, we had the opportunity with Tye's chance, we had the goal disallowed and our moments in the game were as good as their moments - but they got the goal and we didn't.

"It's been far too often this season that we've said that. It's a tight game, it's scrappy, we know what the game is going to look like here but we end up on the wrong side of it and it's frustrating."

Good ball from Celina but Campbell can't control in the box.

Celina dinked a through ball over the defence, a really clever pass, but it was a tough take for Campbell and he couldn't nudge it past the keeper.

Luton 1 Stoke 0

Another Stoke corner , this time to the back post and Jagielka kfnds Smallbone to cross again but Wilmot shows he's nt a striker in the six-yard box.

Laurent does well to get through challenges but when the ball is passed wide to Fox, it's a really poor cross.
