Berkshire local elections 2024: Labour keep control of Reading

Local Elections 2024

Labour remains in control of Reading Borough Council after the recent local elections.

The Green Party obtained another position and preserved their status as the principal opposition party.

The whole bunch of positions in Wokingham Borough Council, and a third of the seats in Reading Borough Council were open for voting.

The group known as the Liberal Democrats have been in charge of Wokingham Borough Council for the last two years despite not having a majority. They nearly gained complete control, missing it by only one council member.

The counting of ballots for the election of the Thames Valley police and crime commissioner (PCC) is scheduled for Saturday.

The number of seats held by the Labour party in Reading Borough Council has remained constant at 32.

The Green party achieved success in Katesgrove as their representative, Kate Nikulina, gained a seat. It is notable that Nikulina has previously participated in three elections.

She occupied the chair that was previously used by the Labour representative, Liam Challenger.

After the elections, the party emerged as the primary opposition group by securing eight seats.

Labour's Daya Pal Singh has regained his position on the council by defeating Simon Robinson, the previous Emmer Green ward Conservative councillor.

The Tories are now left with only four councillors, whilst the Lib Dems maintain their three councillors.

The Liberal Democrats still hold the most seats in Wokingham Borough Council after the elections, with a total of 27 seats.

The council still has no overall control despite the Conservatives gaining 19 and Labour gaining 8 seats.
