The commencement of the first significant competition of the year was postponed for two and a half hours due to thunderstorms on Thursday. This resulted in 27 players needing to resume their initial round on Friday morning.

Woods made his first appearance in a competition since the Genesis Invitational in February where he withdrew in the middle of the round. The first day went well for him, but he had difficulty with the colder weather when play resumed the next day at 7:50am locally, which is 12:50pm in British time. This was only his seventh event since November 2020.

Bad Morning For Tiger Woods

Woods started his round at the 14th hole with a score of one under par, trailing DeChambeau by six shots. However, he immediately fell behind when his approach shot from the fairway missed the green, resulting in a bogey on his first hole of the day.

He stood up and sat back down from the rear of the 15th green, managing to save par. He then took two shots to complete the 16th hole, resulting in another par. Unfortunately, despite striving for a birdie on the 17th, he fell short. He ended up with a bogey on the last hole due to finding a sand bunker by the green. This performance was accomplished by a 48-year-old individual.

After finishing his first round, the talented golfer who has won 15 major championships had a little over 45 minutes to rest before starting his second round. His ultimate goal was to maintain his impressive record of never missing the cut in The Masters tournament while playing as a professional.

During the game, Max Homa, who played alongside Woods, made a short-lived attempt to challenge DeChambeau's first-place title. Homa successfully scored two consecutive birdies starting from the 15th hole, which brought him up to a tie with Scottie Scheffler, the current best player in the world, for second place. Unfortunately, Homa later made a bogey on the final hole, causing him to drop back to a score of five under.

Homa is now tied for third place alongside Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard, who managed to match the lowest round ever scored by a European rookie at the Masters. Some of the biggest names in golf had quite surprising finishes to their first rounds.

Jordan Spieth was struggling with a score of one over, having just five holes left to play. To add insult to injury, he followed a bogey at the 14th with a terrible quadruple-bogey nine on the par-five hole after that. This made things worse for the three-time major champion, who ended up with a poor score of seven over 79. Reigning Open winner Brian Harman also had a rough time, with a back-nine score of 47 and a drop of seven shots over the last three holes, leading to a score of nine over 81.
