The ex-Scottish leader, Nicola Sturgeon, has expressed that the accusations regarding her spouse's theft of funds from the Scottish National Party are extremely challenging for her.

On Thursday, law enforcement officials detained and accused Peter Murrell, who used to hold the position of principal executive of the political organization.

The present head of Scottish government, Humza Yousaf, deemed the situation as "extremely severe". He also stated that Mr Murrell has voluntarily left his position as a member of the SNP.

For 22 years, the head of the political party was held by Mr Murrell.

Ms Sturgeon briefly addressed the press on her way out of her house in Glasgow, where she resides with her husband.

She expressed that the difficulty level is extremely high, however, that is not the most significant problem in this situation.

I cannot speak further; I refrain from continuing my speech.

Before, Mr Murrell was taken into custody as a potential offender on April 5th, 2023. However, he was released without any formal accusations.

He was taken into custody once more, following additional interrogation by law enforcement officers as part of Operation Branchform's investigation into the funding and financial activities of the SNP. He was formally accused on Thursday.

See: Peter Murrell has just returned to his residence from the Falkirk Police station where he was interrogated and accused of stealing funds.

The top government minister, Humza Yousaf, expressed great concern over the news, calling it a very significant and worrying development.

He stated that the news would come as a surprise to many people involved in the SNP and the wider Scottish political sphere. The investigation is ongoing and it is the responsibility of the police and the crown to carry out their duties, just as it is his responsibility as the first minister to do his job.

According to Mr Yousaf, he was unaware of Mr Murrell's re-arrest until it was reported on Thursday.

He said that even though Ms. Sturgeon and Colin Beattie, the former treasurer of the party, were both once detained, they are still affiliated with the SNP.

According to Police Scotland, both Ms Sturgeon and Mr Beattie have not been arrested again or charged, but they are still being investigated.

In July 2021, the authority commenced a probe into the fiscal dealings of the Scottish National Party after being notified about their utilization of contributions.

Doubts have been expressed about donations worth over 660,000 British pounds procured by the party, which were intended to fund a new independence referendum campaign.

Last year, Mr. Murrell was apprehended and consequently, the authorities performed a thorough search of both the SNP headquarters situated in Edinburgh and also of the residence he shares with Ms. Sturgeon in Glasgow.

The pair tied the knot in 2010.

On the 11th of June, Ms Sturgeon willingly met with the Police Scotland for questioning in relation to the investigation, following which she was apprehended. However, she was later released without any charges.
