Humza Yousaf ‘shocked’ by embezzlement charges against Peter Murrell

Peter Murrell

Humza Yousaf expressed his surprise at the allegations of theft brought against Peter Murrell, the ex-leader of the Scottish National party.

On Thursday evening, Police Scotland made a statement that Murrell, who is the spouse of Yousaf's mentor and former first minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon, had been taken into custody again and accused of stealing money from the SNP.

Murrell, who is 59 years old, was set free after spending over 9 hours in custody on Thursday. He has not given any statement about the investigation or the charges against him since his initial arrest on April 5, 2020. It has been uncovered that he has stepped down from his position as a member of the SNP.

Police Scotland declared that they will send a comprehensive report to prosecutors at the Crown Office, who will evaluate it.

On Friday, Yousaf expressed his concern about the recent revelation. The accusation of stealing money from the party's funds is not something to be taken lightly. Peter Murrell, who is known by many individuals in the Scottish National Party as well as in Scottish politics, will have shocked many with this news.

"I anticipate that this news will come as a surprise to a lot of individuals, just like it has for me."

On Friday, Sturgeon had a chat with the media outside her home in Glasgow. She mentioned that the situation had been really tough and requested for peace for her neighbours as she departed by car.

The leader of the SNP and first minister stated that he only found out about the allegations when the police announced them publicly on Thursday night. He emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement and the crown to carry out their duties.

Murrell is facing accusations as a result of a police inquiry called Operation Branchform that commenced about three years ago after claims that the SNP had mishandled approximately £660,000 in contributions meant for a fighting fund towards an independence referendum.

The contributions were not individually detailed in the political group's financial records. Murrell and Sturgeon affirmed that the funds had been completely and appropriately documented within the organization.

In June 2023, Sturgeon was taken into police custody and questioned as a possible suspect after consenting to a scheduled police interview. Subsequently, she was set free without being charged. Similarly, Colin Beattie, the former party treasurer, was detained at his residence in Midlothian in mid-April 2023 and later released without any charges against him.

She struggled to deal with a broader conflict within the SNP concerning the party's finances. This issue arose when many members of the finance committee resigned, followed by Douglas Chapman, who was the party treasurer at that time.

Sturgeon has expressed multiple times that she has not done anything wrong. During the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August, she mentioned that the police investigation, which also involved searching her house in Glasgow, was an extremely distressing experience.

She stated: "I constantly remind myself that I am confident in my own stance and I know for sure that I haven't done anything incorrect. As a result, I must rely on and do have faith in the procedure."

Yousaf expressed his wish that the disagreement won't harm the backing for the SNP as they move towards the upcoming national election.

As the prime minister, his primary objective was to assist families in dealing with the financial crisis, minimizing the duration of waiting times at hospitals, promoting entrepreneurship, and advocating for independence.

He expressed his desire that people continue to trust them because of their successful track record, but he is aware of the importance of not becoming too comfortable with their current standing.

The delivery history indicates that around 100,000 underprivileged children will no longer be living in poverty this year. This achievement has also enabled a significant number of youth from areas with the most hardship to enroll in universities, which is also a new record.

This year, many people were able to enjoy a freeze on their national council tax. This is exactly what I wanted to achieve for them, and serves as a great example of something tangible that positively influences their daily lives. It's the kind of accomplishment that I hope people will remember and consider when evaluating my efforts.
