Laurence Fox has lost his ‘good name’: what now for the sad clown of the culture wars circus? | Marina Hyde

Laurence Fox

Could Laurence Fox's acting career have been ruined by strangers accusing him of racism on social media? According to a recent judgement by a high court judge, this is not the case. The same judge also ruled that Fox had defamed the individuals who called him racist by referring to them as "paedophiles". It seems that labelling someone as a paedophile is not acceptable unless you are the owner of Twitter or another similar platform. In contrast, Elon Musk was sued by a diver involved in the Thai cave rescue in the US, not the UK. Musk expressed his relief after being cleared in court, saying that his "faith in humanity is restored". However, Laurence Fox did not make any public statements after the court's decision.

The leader of the Reclaim party and actor in the Hunter Biden biopic, Laurence Fox, gave a lengthy explanation outside of the high court. His speech had a casual feel to it. Fox claimed that after spending millions, they had no significant outcome. During his speech, he wore glasses with lenses that change color in different lighting. This type of glasses may suggest that Fox is looking for trouble with inmates at HMP Full Sutton. His girlfriend, Liz Barker, accompanied him. Liz has expressed beliefs that the moon landings were fake and doesn't support the idea of human evolution from apes. Rather, she thinks humans come from a different race.

Someone who claims to believe in freedom of speech and has sued for defamation before is back at it again. Laurence is now counter-suing because he believes that his good reputation is very important to him. However, it seems a bit too late for that as his reputation has already been tarnished for a long time. In fact, it's been so long that it happened centuries ago, even before the invention of the electric lightbulb! But, if someone is kind enough to help out (more on that later), his reputation may one day be recovered and saved as a reminder of how ridiculous the 21st century could be. And all of this fuss started because a supermarket tweeted about Black History Month.

However, the trial was quite entertaining for the public as Laurence spoke about his acting career and even alleged that he was supposedly offered a role in The Batman before his downfall. This claim has not been verified, but it's easy to imagine him playing the character who was involved in the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents. Fox also stated that he was approached to be a part of the hit TV show Succession, which was undoubtedly an exciting story to hear for those involved in the show. However, there was no memory of him being considered for a role in the show. It's possible that he might have been on a British casting assistant's list, but if so, it would have to have been a very long list. One of the writers from Succession recalls talking about Laurence in the writer's room, but not in connection with a role on the show.

Although Laurence Fox has faced many humiliations and losses, his fundamental foolishness and insatiable desire for attention keep him in the realm of comedy, rather than tragedy. He is more like Malvolio from Shakespeare's play than Macbeth. Following his fateful appearance on Question Time, Laurence proudly told the Sunday Times that he was the only guest to bring guitars and other silly things. Even now, I can't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Ever since that moment, it seems like he's been pretending – trying to get attention like a mediocre supporting actor. You could say that his behavior is like that of a toddler who is "acting out". It wouldn't be surprising if Laurence suddenly decided to switch gears and start apologizing or exposing the far-right just because it might earn him more recognition and money. He might even release a couple of bluegrass albums about his personal journey with titles like "Redemption Creek" and "Question Time?"

Let's talk about Fox's financial situation, which is often thought to be perpetual poverty. However, some people are surprised by this assumption, as Laurence receives a substantial amount of money each year from Jeremy Hosking, one of the largest donors to the Brexit campaign. Hosking is a wealthy investor who supports Reclaim, and has given millions to the cause, despite having very little to show for it. His Brexit crusade has expanded to include culture wars and opposition to the net zero movement. To put it into perspective, MP Andrew Bridgen had to disclose last year that Hosking had loaned him a staggering amount of £4,470,576.42 with no interest in a failed attempt to gain control of his family's potato farm. After Bridgen was stripped of his Tory status for comparing the Covid vaccine to the Holocaust, he briefly joined Reclaim but is now independent. Despite this, Hosking is still contributing to his campaign to retain his seat.

It's evident that Laurence Fox is just one example of what's happening here - an individual being financially supported by an anonymous figure in order to gain both political and cultural influence, all while pretending to care about the state of democracy. So, who is this person behind the scenes, dishing out money for the sake of distractions and time-consuming projects? The Reclaim party's latest financial records are way past due, yet our attention remains on the puppet, rather than the person pulling the strings.
