Toronto Raptors' Jontay Porter banned from NBA

Jontay Porter

The league conducted an inquiry and discovered that Porter committed offenses related to sports betting.

The NBA made an announcement that Jontay Porter, who is currently playing for the Toronto Raptors, cannot play in the NBA anymore. This is because Jontay Porter shared top-secret information with people who bet money on sports.

After the league looked into the matter, they found out that Porter had shared secret information about his health with someone who likes to bet on the NBA before March 20th. They also discovered that Porter didn't play as much as he could have in a game or some games because he was betting on them.

As per the NBA, an individual associated with Porter decided to make a bet with an online sportsbook that could potentially win them $1.1m. The amount they put up for the bet was $80,000. The basis of their wager was that Porter would not perform well during the match held on March 20th against the Sacramento Kings. Unfortunately for Porter and the Raptors, they lost the game by a wide margin of 123-89.

Additionally, it was found out that the defendant utilized the login credentials of another person in order to place at minimum 13 wagers on National Basketball Association matches commencing from January up until March this year. These wagers varied in the amount staked, ranging from $15 to a staggering $22,000. The overall total of the bets placed amounts to $54,094, with a cash-out amounting to $76,059. The entirety of the total profit earned stands at $21,965.

The inquiry kicked off after licensed sports betting operators notified the NBA of dubious betting behavior.

The head of the NBA spoke out about Porter's punishment, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the fairness of the league for all involved. He affirmed that Porter's disregard for the rules of the game warranted a harsh penalty.

The NBA, MLB, and NHL collaborated last year on a responsible betting advertisement campaign to emphasize that sports betting should only be used for amusement.
