Giro d'Italia 2024

From May 4th to May 26th, Italy's challenging mountains will be the stage for the 2024 Giro d'Italia. Regarded as one of the toughest men's grand tours, it kicks off the season. Tadej Pogačar, the two-time Tour de France winner, will be competing in his first Giro. He's aiming to snatch the pink jersey from riders such as Geraint Thomas, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Ben O'Connor, and Romain Bardet, who will all try to stop the Slovenian.

Take a look at step-by-step summaries of the events featured below.

The victorious contestant of the stage is Jhonatan Narváez, belonging to the cycling team INEOS Grenadiers.

The current frontrunner in the competition is Jhonatan Narváez from the cycling team INEOS Grenadiers.

There was a lot of excitement during the first stage of the Giro d’Italia, and a rider nobody expected won. Team UAE Emirates did a great job setting up Tadej Pogačar for the win, but some other riders tried to break away from the group for a long time. Pogačar managed to break free with Jhonatan Narváez (from the INEOS Grenadiers team) and Max Schachmann (from the Bora-Hansgrohe team) in the last four kilometers of the race. However, Pogačar was unable to beat Narváez and Schachmann in a final sprint. It was a bit surprising, but Narváez, who is 27 years old and the Ecuador national champion, finished first, followed by Schachmann in second place and Pogačar in third. Narváez now gets to wear the maglia rosa (pink jersey), which is awarded to the leader of the race, during the first stages of the 2024 Tour of Italy.

Even though Pogačar didn't come out as the winner of the stage, he's still in a better position than a lot of his top contenders for the General Classification in Stage 2. Geraint Thomas, who is part of the INEOS Grenadiers team, was behind Pogačar by 10 seconds during the stage. When taking into account the time bonuses, Thomas ends up being 14 seconds behind Pogačar in the overall GC standings.
