Denmark's Queen Margrethe to retain title after abdication

Denmark Queen Margrethe

On Wednesday, the palace announced that Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will keep her title even after she steps down on January 14th.

In her New Year's message to the people, Margrethe II announced the unexpected news that she will be stepping down as the regent of Denmark. She holds the title of Europe's longest-reigning monarch, having served for a period of 52 years up to this present day.

After the 14th of January, Denmark will boast of two queens post the succession, namely, Queen Margrethe II and Queen Mary.

Margrethe II became queen in 1972 after her father, King Frederik IX, passed away. In Denmark, queens who become widows are sometimes referred to as enkedronning, which means "widow queen."

At the age of 55, Crown Prince Frederik will become King Frederik X without a formal coronation ceremony. It has been verified that a high-level Cabinet meeting will declare him as the new monarch once his mother steps down from the throne.

The new ruler will be introduced by the Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who will be standing on a balcony.
