The city of Chicago prohibited the Cinco de Mayo procession due to an incident where hoodlums started firing guns around 60 minutes after the festivities began.

On Sunday, the parade that kicked off around Damen Avenue and Cermak Road at noon got a response from the Chicago Police Department.

At 1.30pm, the CPD made an announcement that the parade had been called off due to concerns over safety, specifically regarding the presence of gang-related violence in the vicinity.

The announcement shared that many people have been arrested, amongst which some were caught with guns. Currently, the CPD is making sure that the parade route is safe and urging all those who attended the parade to go back home securely.

The festival held to commemorate Cinco de Mayo in Chicago was called off during the evening of Sunday because the local authorities intervened in response to incidents of criminal activity perpetrated by individuals affiliated to gangs in the vicinity.

It is unknown if anyone got hurt and the reason for the exchange of gunshots is not clear. Law enforcement officers are still present at the location for the collection of evidence.

On Sunday, during the Five Boro Bike Tour in New York City, three cyclists carried sombreros on their backs.

It is not certain if anyone was hurt and the reason for the exchange of gunfire is unknown. According to NBC Chicago, the police are still present at the location to gather evidence.

Initially, the Chicago Fire Department received instructions to go to the site. Subsequently, the police team came to help, and they made an effort to redirect the procession route, intending to provide an alternative way for the people residing in the neighborhood and their loved ones to avoid the place.

The video displayed a disorganized and tumultuous environment in which men were shouting and fleeing while police attempted to restrict the vicinity.

Only a week ago, Hector Escobar - the leader of Casa Puebla that arranges celebrations in Little Village - shared with Fox 32 his excitement about bringing the parade back. This comes after a 5-year break.

Escobar expressed his desire to restore an exquisite thing for the enjoyment of the community.

According to the Chicago Tribune, disagreements between the organizers and 12th Ward Ald. George Cardenas led to the Little Village parade being put on hold for a few years.

According to Escobar, the problems were resolved and forgotten, as the parade was scheduled to return in 2022. However, due to COVID, it was canceled.

In various cities throughout the nation, Cinco de Mayo festivities have persisted. This holiday commemorates Mexico's success in defeating the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
