Burnley 1-4 Newcastle: Vincent Kompany's side move closer to relegation with chastening home defeat

Burnley vs Newcastle

It was a really bad day for Burnley, as they lost 4-1 to Newcastle in the Premier League and fell five points behind in the battle to avoid relegation. Nottingham Forest also won their game, which made Burnley's situation even worse. It's looking more and more likely that they will be relegated.

At the start of Saturday, the Clarets had a slim chance of avoiding relegation by finishing the day outside the relegation zone. However, now they have to win their last two games and rely on other teams' results to be able to avoid being relegated, as Forest won 3-1 against Sheffield United who were already relegated.

The match at Turf Moor started off well for Burnley, with Lorenz Assignon being a significant threat. However, things quickly turned against them after Callum Wilson scored from Alexander Isak's rebound. This led to Burnley's collapse, and Newcastle took advantage with swift goals from Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes before the end of the first half, leaving Burnley with little chance of catching up.

Newcastle United had the luxury of witnessing Isak's penalty miss early in the second half, but the forward quickly made up for it by scoring from a short distance. This goal helped him reach a total of 20 goals in the league this season and secure the team's position in sixth place. However, this position may change depending on the outcome of the Crystal Palace and Manchester United match on Monday evening, which will be broadcasted live on Sky Sports.

Despite Dara O'Shea scoring a goal from a corner at the end, Burnley still lost the game. This loss is a big disappointment and now they must win against Tottenham and Nottingham Forest if they want to avoid being relegated.

If Forest only scores one point against Chelsea in their upcoming Sky Sports match, it will still result in Clarets' relegation due to their significantly better goal difference.

However, Vincent Kompany displayed a determined attitude and did not lose faith in their chances of surviving. He expressed this to Sky Sports, stating that if it were not for the fact that Forest must play against them on the last day, the task would be challenging.

"Even though we have no power over their actions on the upcoming weekend, we must proceed. The outcome of a single game can make all the difference. If we come out victorious and they suffer a loss, great opportunities may arise. That's all that matters to me."

Burnley's lineup consisted of Muric with a rating of 7, followed by Assignon with a rating of 6. O'Shea and Larsen both had a rating of 6. Esteve had a rating of 5, as did Odobert, Cullen, Berge, Brownhill, and Foster. Vitinha had the lowest rating of 4.

Players: Ekdal (5), Gudmundsson (6), Fofana, Amdouni (not available).

The football team from Newcastle had some impressive scores during their latest match. Dubravka earned a 7, Livramento also scored a 7, Krafth received a 6, Burn got a 7, Hall earned a 6. In terms of midfielders, Murphy was the strongest player with an 8, followed by Longstaff with a 7 and Guimaraes with another 8. Gordon also earned an impressive 8 for his skills and Wilson earned a 7. Lastly, Isak was the strongest offensive player with an outstanding score of 8.

Burnley's Survival Hope Shattered In Worst Hit

Burnley had been facing possible relegation with 11 points shy of safety in mid-March. However, a string of just one loss out of eight games had lifted their spirits and given them a genuine chance to survive, less than sixty days later.

The recent improvement of Newcastle's performance in trying to qualify for Europe came close to spoiling the mood, but Burnley quickly took control of the game. Jacob Bruun Larsen made an excellent attempt to score but was stopped by Martin Dubravka's amazing save.

Once again this season, the home team was taken by surprise by their opponents' initial attempt. Wilson managed to score from a short distance after Isak's shot was blocked by Arijanet Muric.

Burnley kept pushing hard, but they faced a tough challenge after Longstaff scored a second goal by shooting the ball across Muric. Longstaff's goal came after a clever assist from Jacob Murphy.

After five minutes, the game was officially finished. A counterattack led by Anthony Gordon was passed to Guimaraes, who expertly put the ball into the net at the close post. Unfortunately, Kompany could only watch from the sidelines, his expression unmoving.

While Wilson was cautioned for simulation in Burnley's area during the initial 45 minutes, Gordon was successful in earning a clear penalty just after the second half kicked off. He collaborated with his teammate from a quick corner pass and was cynically taken down by Josh Brownhill.

Despite Wilson's wish to take the penalty kick, Isak used his seniority to overrule him. However, Isak felt embarrassed when Muric managed to save his feeble attempt.

Shortly after, he redeemed himself by scoring a goal with a gentle kick after receiving a pass from Murphy. This added to the already impressive performance by the Magpies throughout the afternoon.

Towards the end of the game, there were only a small number of supporters still in the stadium, and they finally had a reason to be happy. O'Shea managed to score a goal from a corner that Johann Gudmundsson took. However, this was the only highlight of the match for the home team.

The day that was supposed to bring Burnley to safety by lifting them above the relegation zone turned out to be a disappointment, as they now have to rely on a series of favorable outcomes in order to avoid it.

During an interview with Sky Sports, Vincent Kompany, who is the manager of Burnley, stated:

Today, we faced a tougher opponent. Our team brought a lot of effort, placed ourselves in a position to exceed expectations, and had opportunities and drive. However, failing to take advantage of those chances can result in an unfavorable outcome.

The team deserves credit for their efforts in persevering until the very end of the game; we consistently maintained a high level of energy. Despite our best efforts, our opponents were simply more skilled.

The team was ready, and there was plenty of determination and encouragement from our supporters. Everyone was enthusiastic and eager to participate.

Today, we must praise the opposing team. We need to move forward and aim to achieve something extraordinary in our upcoming match.

Regarding the possibility of surviving: "It would be challenging if Forest didn't have to play here on the last day."

Since we have no authority over their actions during the upcoming weekend, we cannot dictate their decisions. However, we should focus on winning the game. If we are victorious and they experience a loss, it could lead to exciting possibilities. That is sufficient for me.

During an interview with Sky Sports, Eddie Howe, the current Newcastle United manager, stated:

The beginning of the match was quite challenging. We had already anticipated that it would be tough given Burnley's current standing and the fact that their home turf can be quite challenging to play at.

"After we composed ourselves, our football skills improved considerably. I believe that the first goal was responsible for that positive change. After that, we never lost our momentum."

Scoring goals in football is a challenging task indeed, but if we manage to consistently score, the likelihood of winning increases. Although we acknowledge the necessity to enhance our defensive skills, our team performed well in this regard today.

Regarding Isak's 20 goals, the coach expressed that missing a penalty can occur and he has performed well in this area during the year. Despite the miss, the coach is delighted that Isak scored soon after, which will boost his confidence.

Regarding the European aspirations, we are currently putting up a fight to secure those spots. This puts us in a more favorable position compared to our standing before the game. However, we are now facing a challenging week ahead, with three games lined up starting with Brighton.

Burnley will face Tottenham on May 11 at 3pm in their second-last game of the season. Afterwards, they will welcome Nottingham Forest on May 19 at 4pm in their final game of the season, which could potentially decide the fate of the teams' relegation status.

There are still three games left for Newcastle. First, they'll be playing against Brighton on May 11th at 3pm, then they're off to Manchester United on May 15th for an important match shown live on Sky Sports, with kick-off at 8pm, to try and earn a spot in Europe. Their last game will be against Brentford on May 19th, with the game starting at 4pm.
