Burnley 1-4 Newcastle: Vincent Kompany's side move closer to relegation with chastening home defeat

Burnley vs Newcastle

Burnley had a terrible afternoon which led them to fall five points behind the Premier League safety zone. A harsh 4-1 loss to Newcastle, combined with Nottingham Forest's victory, pushed them closer towards being relegated.

At the start of Saturday's game, the Clarets were hoping to rank higher than the relegation zone by the end of the day. However, in light of Forest's 3-1 win against Sheffield United, who have already been relegated, things have changed. The Clarets must now emerge victorious in their remaining two games and hope for favorable outcomes in other games to avoid being relegated.

At Turf Moor, Burnley made a strong start and Lorenz Assignon was causing problems for the opposition. However, things quickly turned against Burnley after Callum Wilson scored from the rebound of Alexander Isak's shot. It was a repeat of previous matches as Burnley's performance collapsed, and Newcastle took advantage of this with fast goals from Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes before half-time. Newcastle's lead became insurmountable for Burnley.

Newcastle United were able to handle the situation when Isak failed to hit the target from the penalty spot soon after the match resumed. However, the striker managed to compensate by scoring from a short distance, adding up to a total of 20 goals in the league competition this season. This has secured the team's sixth spot for now, although the position may change depending on the outcome of Manchester United's game against Crystal Palace, which will be broadcasted live on Sky Sports on Monday evening.

Although Dara O'Shea managed to score a goal from a corner towards the end, Burnley still suffered another tough loss. If they don't secure full points against Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, they will definitely be relegated.

If Forest were to earn just one point against Chelsea in their upcoming match broadcasted on Sky Sports, it's probable that the Clarets will be relegated due to the significant difference in their goal tallies.

Nevertheless, Vincent Kompany was determined to keep a positive outlook and not lose faith in their chances of surviving. During an interview with Sky Sports, he stated that if it weren't for the fact that Forest had to play at their home stadium on the last day, he would acknowledge the challenge of staying afloat as quite demanding.

However, despite their actions in the upcoming weekend being beyond our control, winning just one game could lead to great things if we can ensure their defeat in their own game. Such possibilities are more than satisfactory for me.

Burnley players, Muric had a score of 7, Assignon had a score of 6, O'Shea also had a score of 6, Esteve had a score of 5, Vitinha had the lowest score of 4. Cullen, Berge, Odobert, and Brownhill had a score of 5 each. Larsen scored 6 and Foster scored 5.

Players on the subs bench were Ekdal, who had a rating of 5, and Gudmundsson with a rating of 6. Fofana and Amdouni were not applicable as they did not make it onto the subs bench.

The football club of Newcastle fielded a team consisting of Dubravka who scored 7 out of 10, Livramento who also scored 7 out of 10, Krafth who got 6 out of 10, Burn with a score of 7 out of 10, Hall who scored 6 out of 10, Murphy who got a solid score of 8 out of 10, Longstaff who scored 7 out of 10, Guimaraes who also scored 8 out of 10, Gordon who received an 8 out of 10 score, Wilson with a score of 7 out of 10 and finally Isak who achieved an impressive score of 8 out of 10.

Barnes, Anderson, Almiron, Joelinton, and Ritchie (whose score was not available) were all part of the team.

Bruno Guimaraes was named the standout performer of the match.

Burnley's Survival Crushed By Devastating Blow

Burnley had a streak of only one loss in eight games which made them believe they could avoid relegation. This was a significant improvement given that less than two months prior, they were 11 points away from safety in March.

The recent surge of Newcastle's performance in their quest for a spot in Europe seemed like it would spoil the fun, but Burnley quickly took control of the game. Jacob Bruun Larsen had a good attempt, but Martin Dubravka foiled his shot with a dive.

Once again this season, the home team was surprised by their rivals' initial offensive maneuver. Wilson managed to push the ball into the net from a short distance after Isak's attempt was blocked by Muric.

Burnley persevered, however, they faced a major challenge as soon as Longstaff successfully hit the target against Muric for a second time with a clever pass from Jacob Murphy.

After five minutes, the game ended. Guimaraes scored a goal thanks to a counter led by Anthony Gordon. He kicked the ball into the net with his side foot near the post. Kompany sat in the dugout, looking unhappy and powerless to change the outcome of the game.

Wilson got a caution for faking a foul inside the Burnley box during the first half. However, in the second half, Gordon managed to get a definite penalty when he played a quick exchange from a corner and was taken down by Josh Brownhill.

Isak used his authority to decide who took the penalty kick, disregarding Wilson's wishes. However, Isak was embarrassed when he failed to make a strong shot and the goalkeeper, Muric, easily blocked it.

He quickly made up for his mistake by scoring a goal with the inside of his foot after receiving a cross from Murphy. This added to the already impressive performance by Newcastle United.

The small amount of supporters still in Turf Moor found a reason to be happy when O'Shea scored from a corner kick by Johann Gudmundsson, but unfortunately, it was the only successful moment for them.

The day that was supposed to be a potential victory for Burnley and move them up in the rankings turned out to be a disappointment. Instead, they now require a flawless series of outcomes to steer clear of the relegation zone.

Kompany: Expecting Something Extraordinary

Vincent Kompany, the manager of Burnley, informed Sky Sports during an interview:

Today, we competed against a superior team. Despite our efforts to bring in the excitement and push ourselves to exceed expectations, we were not able to capitalize on our opportunities and gain momentum. In these situations, failing to take advantage of the chances presented can often result in a negative outcome.

Congratulations to the team for giving it their all and playing until the very end. Despite the outcome, we never gave up and continued to fight. Although we were present, they were more skilled and outperformed us.

The squad was determined and motivated, there was no shortage of hard work or encouragement from our supporters. All the members of the team were enthusiastic, each one eager to take part.

Today, it's imperative that we extend our congratulations to the opposing team. Let's look forward to a fresh beginning and the possibility of achieving something exceptional in the upcoming match.

When considering survival odds, I would find it challenging if it were not for the fact that Forest must play at this location on the last day.

As they have their own autonomy, it's beyond our power to dictate their actions for the upcoming weekend. However, this situation pertains to a single game. In the event where we attain a victory and they suffer a defeat, remarkable outcomes may arise. This notion suffices for my satisfaction.

"Howe: Scoring First Calmed Us"

During an interview with Sky Sports, Eddie Howe, the current manager of Newcastle, stated:

The beginning was challenging, as anticipated due to Burnley's current position, and playing on this field is not easy.

After we got into a comfortable position, we displayed some impressive skills on the field. In my opinion, the initial goal was the turning point. From then on, we maintained our dominance without any hiccups.

"Putting the ball in the back of the net is the most challenging task in football. Thus, if we can consistently succeed in scoring goals, we stand a good chance of emerging victorious. Although we acknowledge the need to enhance our defense, I deem our performance in that aspect as relatively sound today."

Regarding Isak's 20-goal achievement, the coach mentioned that missing a penalty can occur at times. However, he also added that Isak has performed well in spot-kicks this season. The coach expressed satisfaction on Isak's quick recovery after the miss, scoring a goal shortly after. He believes that this goal will boost Isak's motivation.

About European aspirations: "We're battling to secure those spots, which puts us in a stronger position compared to prior to the match. Our next challenge is a demanding week with three games, beginning with Brighton."

The second to last match for Burnley this season will be against Tottenham on May 11th, with the game starting at 3pm. Following that, they will have their final match against fellow relegation candidates Nottingham Forest on May 19th, with the game starting at 4pm.

There are still three matches left for Newcastle. They will first play at home against Brighton on May 11 at 3pm. Then, they will have a crucial match against Manchester United on May 15, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports at 8pm. This match is really important for their chances to qualify for Europe. They will finally end the season with a game at Brentford on May 19, with a kick-off time of 4pm.
