Barcelona grab win with late Lewandowski penalty

Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski has scored a total of 13 goals in 24 La Liga matches this season.

Barcelona managed to secure a win by narrowly beating Celta Vigo 2-1. Their victory was sealed when Robert Lewandowski calmly scored a penalty that was retaken in the 97th minute.

The footballer from Poland scored the first goal for the visiting team, who had previously tied 3-3 with Granada last weekend, by shooting the ball with force and at an angle.

Celta, currently in the fourth lowest spot of La Liga, managed to tie the game with a goal from Iago Aspas, who's shot deflected before going in, not long after the second half began.

However, Lewandowski secured the win by scoring a penalty, which resulted in Barcelona, who were in third place, trailing Real Madrid by a gap of seven points.

Real Leaders are set to play against their city rivals Rayo Vallecano this Sunday. They're currently five points ahead of Girona, who sit in second place. Girona had a 1-1 draw against Villarreal on Friday.

This season, Barcelona has accumulated the highest number of points in the Spanish top-flight, totaling 24 through goals scored after the 76th minute.

Ever since Xavi, the head coach, revealed his plans to leave at the end of the season, the Catalans have managed to secure four victories without experiencing any loss.

On Wednesday, Xavi's team will be competing against Napoli in the last 16 round of the Champions League. They hope to win the European competition as it is their only remaining opportunity to obtain a trophy this season.

Atletico Madrid currently hold the fourth position on the table with three points less than Barca. They had an outstanding victory against Las Palmas, winning 5-0 during their game on Saturday.

Atletico saw two goals each from Marcos Llorente and Angel Correa, and ultimately secured their victory when substitute Memphis Depay scored a fifth goal in the dying moments.

The hosts won easily even though Rojiblancos manager Diego Simeone gave rest to important players - such as France forward Antoine Griezmann - before their Champions League last-16 tie against Inter Milan in the middle of the week.

In other places, Cadiz is still in the bottom of the standings after losing 2-0 against Osasuna, who is currently ranked 11th.
