Why are England wearing black armbands?

Terry Venables

The game between England and Brazil tonight will see the players wearing black armbands to honor Terry Venables, a previous England manager who passed away last November.

The Football Association of England put together a recognition ceremony for Venables, who died at the age of 80 on November 25. El Tel, as he was fondly called, served as England's manager from 1994 until the conclusion of the 1996 Euro Soccer Championship. England, who were the host country, were defeated in the semi-finals by Germany in a heartbreaking penalty shootout.

Euro 96 Team Honors Venables At Wembley

The Football Association (FA) has asked the team that played in Euro 96, which includes Gareth Southgate (he was the England coach who didn't make the important penalty against Germany), to come to Wembley stadium to honor them before the match against Brazil.

Venables, who is widely acknowledged as one of the top coaches of his era, has had managerial spells at Crystal Palace, QPR, Barcelona, and Tottenham. Prior to this, he had a successful playing career, representing Chelsea, Tottenham, QPR, Crystal Palace, and even playing for England.

A beautiful photo of the beloved Terry Venables, who is greatly missed, was featured on the cover of the #ENGBRA program. As a tribute to him, the Euro 96 squad members wore black armbands and were seated in the Royal Box and home dugout.
