Tottenham have won 30 of the previous 68 meetings against Preston, but the two sides have not met in the league since 1961.

All seven meetings since then have been in the cup competitions, with North End only coming out on top with a 2-1 FA Cup win all the way back in 1966.

The only clash between the two sides this century was in September 2009, when Peter Crouch scored a hat-trick to go with goals from Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane to seal a 5-1 romp in the third round of the then Carling Cup for Harry Redknapp’s men.

Chris Brown was on target for a Preston side managed by Alan Irvine.

Tottenham are eight-time winners of the FA Cup, but have not lifted football’s oldest trophy since a 2-1 triumph over Nottingham Forest at the old Wembley back in 1991.

Spurs reached the semi-finals in both 2017 and 2018 but have now been dumped out in the fifth round three years running, including by Middlesbrough at the Riverside last season.

That upset will give Preston plenty of hope of pulling off their own shock this evening.

An overcast and wet day in Lancashire, but that shouldn’t detract from what should be a very lively atmosphere this evening.

Preston - FA Cup winners in both 1889 and 1938 - have not been beyond the fourth round of this competition since 2015, when they were beaten by Manchester United in the last-16.

If Kane weren’t ready to start tonight, it could mean Richarlison potentially playing through the middle on his first start since the World Cup break.

Arnaut Danjuma seems most likely to come off the bench for his debut having only joined in midweek, though he’s fit and ready to feature from the off if needed.

“He is available,” Stellini said of the versatile Dutch winger, Spurs’ first January recruit who sensationally snubbed Everton at the 11th hour.

“He is a player we can use in the game. He is a player that can play like a striker or a winger. He has a lot of positions he can cover. So we are happy and we are looking forward to working with him.”

So just how big a role will Kane play in tonight’s proceedings?

The England captain is never one to miss a game unless he absolutely has to, especially with that outright scoring record now tantalisingly close and Championship defenders on tap.

Antonio Conte is not usually fond of resting his talisman and the FA Cup represents Tottenham’s best chance of silverware this term, but they have some other very important games coming up fast including Premier League meetings with Manchester City, West Ham and Chelsea plus their two-legged Champions League last-16 tie against AC Milan.

“We only have one problem with Harry, because he played the last game full of illness and he didn’t train during the week,” said Spurs assistant Cristian Stellini on Friday, sent to face reporters in place of Conte.

“He trained this morning, but he wants to come with us and be available. We know that Harry wants to play every game so we are happy that Harry is available but we have to take care.”

A debate seems to have been brewing this week about just where Harry Kane stands in relation to the all-time Tottenham scoring mark.

According to official club records, he is level with the late Jimmy Greaves on 266 goals and will become the outright leader with his next strike for Spurs, which could come this evening.

However, others have contended this week that Greaves should actually be credited with 268 goals, having netted twice in the 5-1 1962 FA Charity Shield drubbing of Ipswich at Portman Road.

It seems that Tottenham’s historians are not counting that as a competitive fixture, hence the arguments and confusion.

Standard Sport’s chief football correspondent Dan Kilpatrick has arrived at Deepdale, one of English football’s most famous old traditional grounds adorned by tributes to Preston icon and England legend Sir Tom Finney.

Let’s hope he will be joined by a full contingent of travelling fans who have not been too badly affected by the chaos on the railways this afternoon.

While Tottenham have looked far from convincing at the back in recent weeks, Preston are not exactly prolific when it comes to scoring. Only Huddersfield and Cardiff have netted fewer goals in the Championship this season.

With confidence still fragile, any win will do for Spurs as they look to finally kick their season into gear, and another narrow victory could be on the cards.
