Preston vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest score as Kulusevski shot deflected wide, Son effort saved

28 Jan 2023

Hello and welcome to live coverage of Tottenham's FA Cup fourth round clash against Preston North End.

Returning to winning ways on Monday evening with a slender 1-0 victory over Fulham, Antonio Conte and his Spurs team will be intent on following up that win by sealing their place in the next round of the famous competition.

It won't be a straightforward game at all, though, with Preston currently in 11th and three points adrift of fourth after a good season under Ryan Lowe.

Spurs did exit the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Middlesbrough last March, something they will be looking to avoid as they bid to go all the way and lift the trophy at Wembley in May.

Tottenham correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest are covering the match with all the build-up and the action as it happens on the pitch and reaction from the supporters and media.

Here are Alasdair's thoughts on that first half from Spurs

It was all too slow from Tottenham. They had the vast majority of the possession but the lack of movement up front made it all to easy for Preston to defend in and around their penalty area.

The quality from both full-backs Ryan Sessegnon and Matt Doherty has been poor, allied with a lack of targets to aim for without a natural front man darting into the Preston box.

They're missing that sense of urgency in their attacking and it was only in a one-two between Son and Kulusevski that led to a late chance in the half for the latter that showed that Spurs have the quality to open up their organised Championship hosts.

It feels more a matter of when, not if, both Harry Kane and new signing Arnaut Danjuma will enter the fray, perhaps along with Bryan Gil who will feel he deserves a chance despite links with a move away from the club.

Kulusevski effort

Son again

After lots of slow build-up play with little movement, Son takes matters into his own hands and curls an effort from distance that Woodman has to push over with a flying effort.

Here are Alasdair's thoughts on that Spurs line-up

It's a much-changed line-up from Antonio Conte and it's a team with enough experience on paper to do the job, but how many times have we said that before?

Richarlison misses out with a minor knock when he would likely have started which means Ivan Perisic pushes forward alongside Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski. Harry Kane gets to spend at least the start of a match on the bench for the first time this season, doing so alongside new signing Arnaut Danjuma.

It's a rare chance to see Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur as a pairing while Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon will be expected to provide the thrust down the flanks.

Oliver Skipp edges ahead of Pape Matar Sarr for the central midfield bench spot again alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Those linked with a loan move have varying degrees of involvement, Bryan Gil on the bench and Djed Spence not even in the squad.

It's a makeshift back three with Davinson Sanchez in the centre, a role he hasn't always looked comfortable in, and the Colombian captains the side.

World Cup finalists Hugo Lloris and Cristian Romero, who won the competition, both get the weekend off.

It's a 3-4-3 without Kane for the first time this season and it comes in the one competition Spurs have the best chance of progressing far in, as Premier League clubs tumble out of it each round. They cannot afford to put in a similar performance to the one that sent them spiralling out of it at Middlesbrough last season in front of a noisy crowd.

Last time out vs Preston

You have to go back to September 2009 for the last time Tottenham and Preston North End went head-to-head at Deepdale.

Spurs were victorious in the third round of the League Cup that evening courtesy of a 5-1 win, with a Peter Crouch hat-trick and goals from Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane safely putting them through to the next round.
