Newcastle have verified that midfielder Sandro Tonali is currently undergoing an investigation conducted by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) due to an alleged violation of betting regulations.

The Italian footballer, who is 23 years old, was taken out from his national team's loss against England during the Euro 2024 qualifying match at Wembley on Tuesday evening. His team has given out a statement saying that he is working together with the investigation.

Newcastle United announced that Sandro Tonali is currently being investigated by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) due to alleged involvement in illegal betting.

Sandro is actively participating in the inquiry and will keep on collaborating with all pertinent institutions.

The club will keep standing by him and his loved ones to offer complete assistance.

Because of this continuous procedure, Sandro and Newcastle United cannot provide additional remarks at the moment.

During a hearing at the Italian Federation in Turin, the midfielder from Newcastle confirmed on Tuesday that he had placed bets on Milan to win games.

Tonali was implicated in an investigation into football betting in Italy last week. He was then removed from the senior men's team for their loss against England on Tuesday.

According to the reports on Sky Sports News, he supposedly accepted to have gambled on matches, irrespective of whether he participated in them or not, and placed his bets in favor of Milan triumphing.

Players who engage in behavior like this may be subject to a three-year suspension from global soccer, as specified in FIFA Code 26.

It is probable that Tonali will receive a reduced punishment, but one that will still carry on for a long duration due to his cooperation with the investigation and acceptance of responsibility.

Nicolo Fagioli Of Juventus Banned For 7 Months For Betting Violation

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was recently handed a seven-month ban for participating in football betting, becoming the first player involved in the inquiry. Unlike Fagioli, Tonali did not report himself.

According to the FIGC, Fagioli was given a penalty of 12,500 euros (£10,848) and had five months of a one-year suspension postponed. He also committed to a rehabilitation program aimed at addressing his addiction to gambling, which will last for at least six months.

The ruling organization announced on its website that the 22-year-old broke the regulation which restricts the act of placing bets on football matches that are held by FIGC, UEFA, and FIFA.

Tonali, who was transferred from Milan to Newcastle for a fee of £55m during the summer, is anticipated to return to Newcastle on Wednesday.

Tonali's representative acknowledged on Tuesday that Tonali has an issue with gambling and is currently facing his most significant challenge as a player.

On Saturday, Newcastle will be playing against Crystal Palace in their home ground.
